@Boobear...maybe it's because you associate "madam" with being an older woman ? Years ago madam was a slang term for a woman that ran a ***** house .....but today it's just to show appreciation for an older woman ....relax & let it go , at least they didn't call you anything nasty (LOL). 4951

@BooBear:  It's not an insult.  Ma'am is a shortened version of Madame.Madam, or madame /ˈmædəm/, is a polite form of address for women, often contracted to "ma'am". The abbreviation is "Mme" and the plural is mesdames (abbreviated Mmes). The term was borrowed from the French madame (French pronunciation: [maˈdam]), which means "my lady".No need to be ****, my lady! 4951

Ma'am is the abbreviated version of Madam. Madam is derived from French (madame) meaning "my lady".
It's a polite and respectful form of addressing females, regardless of age. 4951

@Boobear...sorry ...but I'm 70 & anytime anyone calls me mam or madam  I'm just thankful they didn't say "ole lady" (LOL) I try to keep my thinking in a "young mode" so I'm not "an old lady " (LOL) 4951
