I have a leaky chimney. I got up on the roof and it Looks like the grout is really worn out in a few places in the brick. I want to get the chimney re-pointed (re-grouted). Has anyone had this done? Any recommendations? Thanks for the Help! 4951

How much does it leak? Mortar very rarely breaks down, unless the foundation has shifted, then it cracks out. Also, check your chimney cap, if you have one. 4951

Chimneys rarely leak from the brick joints. They normally originate where the flashing is connected at the base of the chimney to the shingles at the bottom, and in the mortar joint at the top. If the flashing comes lose, a hard blowing rain can leak into the vertical opening of the flashing. The repair would be to ensure proper caulking with silicone caulk. I was a brick mason back when I used to actually work for a living, so this was the case with about 95% of the leaking chimneys I encountered. 4951
