This is how I always kind of felt about teen trick or treaters and why they still get candy from me as long as they are not rude.http://www.davisenterprise.com/forum/opinion-columns/what-you-need-to-know-about-6-foot-tirck-or-treaters/ 4951

If they're polite & in costume, age doesn't phase me. Then again I trick or treated all through high school in groups with friends, but we ALWAYS dressed up & were always very polite. Now I even half assed dress up when I take DD trick or treating, but only because she asks me to. Emoticon 4951

Agreed. It bums me out when a six footer in jeans and a t-shirt shows up with a dam pillowcase. Emoticon 4951

Oh yeah. If they're teenagers not dressed up at all just holding a pillow case or Kroger bag, I'll make a comment like "where's your costume?" or something like that. No matter what I give them candy though but only because I don't want any leftover candy, but it does bug me if they don't even dress up, & even moreso if they're rude or impolite. For the most part though, I don't discriminate when it comes to who I give candy to, however costumes & manners are always appreciated. 4951

The mom must have been ovulating when she wrote thatEmoticon I always give candy to them but not for some coming of age thing and being trapped between a man and a boy. I just need to get rid of the candy I buy so I don't eat it. 4951

I definitely discriminate. First of all everyone gets something. The cutest youngest ones get a handful from the "best" bucket. Solid costumed elementary and middle schoolers get the same. Hot high school girls get the same whether they are dressed or not. Lousy costumes get a handful from the "crap" bucket (could be last years). No costumes get one small tootsie roll and a kick in the ars. 4951

We give candy to anyone that shows up. Even the prrgnant teenager who was with her mom last year. EmoticonFor the older ones not dressed up, we still give them candy, but I make fun of them in front of their friends also. Nothing too mean, just enough to crush their ego a little. I like the idea of making them sing a song. I think I'll have them sing me a Justin Bieber song. 4951

Thank you for posting this, as a mother of a 12 year old and a 15 year old who both did not go trick or treating last year, I received a call a few minutes ago asking if I would take them and a friend trick or treating, so I googled " rules for teens trick or treating" and saw your post and your attached article.Although in 6th and 10th grade, my kids decided that they arent ready to give up this piece of their childhood quite yet ! 4951

As long as they wear a costume its all good to me. They are too young to hang around bars or do parties so I would not expect them to just not do anything. Plus some of them may be taking younger siblings out or may just look older. I have a friend who's little sister has been taller than me ever since she was 9, she looked like a teenager too. I am not that short either I am 5'4, I see a lot of kids taller than me too.  I give candy based off of costume, the better their costume of the more I like it the more candy I give them, kids dressed like batman always get tons of candy. 4951

Another thing they can do is dress up to greet the young kids.  4951

When I was growing up, we trick-or-treated into our teens.  We didn't wear costumes but we were very nice to everyone.  After all, we lived in a rural area and we knew everyone and they knew us, and our parents! 4951

Over the next few days, a lot of creatures will visit your door. Be open minded. The child who is grabbing more than one piece of candy might have poor fine motor skills. The child who takes forever to pick out one piece of candy might have motor planning issues. The child who does not say "trick or treat" or "thank you" might be painfully shy, non-verbal or selectively mute. If you cannot understand their words, they may struggle with developmental apraxia of speech. They are thankful in their hearts and minds. The child who looks disappointed when he sees your bowl might have a life-threatening allergy. The child who isn't wearing a costume might have SPD or autism. Be kind, be patient, smile, pretend you understand. It's everyone's Halloween. - <going around the web but can't find the original author!> 4951

I'm happy to report that my10th grader and 6th grader were successful trick or treating, however, there were a handful of parents that seemed " irritated" that kids of that age were trick or treating. My kids were in full costume, said trick or treat and please and thank you, let the little kids go first and did not walk across any lawns.

To those that were friendly to them, thank you and to those of you that weren't, I just want to remind you that they are still kids and there are way worse things happening in this world than older kids wanting a peanut butter cup or two! 4951
