I went and tested this out last night, If you take a florescent bulb and hold it underneath a high voltage power line it will light up! (I'm not an electrical engineer but in simplistic terms the alternating current creates an electromagnetic field that will power the bulb)It totally works, was pretty neat to see! I might get cancer from this but oh well I've had a good life : )Ripped this picture off the internet since I didn't take any myself but the effect was similar: 4951

I would not live next to high power electric lines.  We don't know the impact of the electric fields on the human body. 4951
