We got notice yesterday, our deductible (was $100), out of pocket maximum for family(was $600) and our premiums(was less than $80 a pay period) are all going up. There will also be a $35 per tobacco(any kind) user surcharge per pay period.

the affordable care act has made our insurance less affordable. 4951

I work for a small engineering company, so our family rate per month for medical insurance is much more expensive than if I were with a large corporation. We pay over $1,100 a month for medical insurance!! My wife is a contract worker for a large corporation and is expected to be made permanent early next year. Then we'll go on an insurance plan with her employer. The rate will drop significantly. It'll be like getting a free car payment! 4951

@WskyTngoFxtrt: That was a nice benefit for working for a major oil company.... good benefits.  I think I'm paying about $500/month for a family plan.  Now that my daughters working and has her own insurance, my premiums shoul drop below $400.  Of course, I haven't seen the options for next year yet.

The plan hubbys work offers went up 48% and that was the basic plan. 5000 deductible before ANYTHING is paid for. It would have left him with enough money to get gas each week and THATS IT. We couldn't afford it before we sure in the hell cant now. 4951

I have yet to find out how much mine is going up.  I don;t want to start a debate or anything(leaving for work actually) but I do think if you smoke, you should pay more.  4951

Insurance companies have been putting in clauses for tobacco users (including an increased premium) on policies for a while now, well before the ACA was to be enacted.  I worked for Amgen in Seattle, where we had Aetna, and that was several years ago that they put that in place. 4951

How exactly is this smokers premium enforced? How do you know someone is being truthful about their non-smoker status?I don't smoke, so it doesn't affect me, but I just wonder who is ever going to say they smoke? 4951

For Amgen (probably similar elsewhere), during open enrollment, you complete a declaration indicating how many, if any, on the policy were tobacco users.  I suspect the potential for claim denial was in place if a falsehood was found, especially if a claim related to undeclared tobacco use was made.  Otherwise, the honor policy was in place.  No one in our family uses tobacco so I wasn't very well versed in the ramifications. 4951

I guess what happens is if you ever get sick of a possibly smoke-related illness, they dig and deny the claim if they find anything. Like a picture on instagram of your night at the strip club! 4951

What if you drink, drive a lot, eat toothpaste, go tanning, outdoors type, sexually active, walk in the street with your headphones on, couch potatoe, fat, lazy, text while driving, listen to rap, Evan, own a gun, masterbate, watch lifetime, democrat, believe in a belief, walk your dog in someone elses yard and the list goes on and on unless you are viceless.  I think folks that believe they live in a bubble should pay exactly the same as anyone else.@Okiedokie: 4951
