My 12 month old throws food at home and at MDO. Is this a phase? Any way to stop it or at least decrease the number of accurances? 4951

I'll never forget visiting a neighbor.  They had a little one in a high-chair.  His wife was feeding the little boy grapes.  Every time she fed him one, she turned to talk and the boy would spit out the grape onto the floor.  This went on for about 6 grapes when we told her what was happening. 4951

Its a phase/ new skill. She is learning to control her environment. Tell her no no. Pick it up and go on. Its fun when they learn to throw things, get her a ball and play catch. 4951

I've done a bit of reading about this. I've read that in most cases they're testing limits. If you give her a stern NO when she does it, she's going to do it over and over to make sure she gets the same reaction each time. Then she'll be able to piece it together and realize that she gets an unhappy reaction when she does that. She doesn't know that it's wrong to throw food. Some say to end the meal when they throw food. I'm sure the baby figures out quickly that throwing food causes them to lose the rest of their meal, teaching them to not do that. But I personally think that's pretty harsh for a baby that's simply trying to learn about her environment. I think it's one of those things that will take constant repetition, but eventually she'll get it. Maybe try making only small amounts of food available to her at a time. Like a few bites of pasta instead of the entire bowl.  4951

To stop bad behavior just roll up a newspaper and give them a firm tap on the nose with it or carry a spray bottle and sprits their face when they misbehave.

My 3 yo granddaughter LOVES the spray bottle. She will purposely do things wrong and go get the bottle we use for the cat and tell us to spray her. 4951

Then, when they get a little older and understand humor a bit - like 3 yr. olds......they sometimes think it is funny when you get mad.  Then, they start to laugh and giggle, and it is just so darned cute sometimes that it is hard not to smile and laugh with them and to maintain seriousness....Dang kids.... 4951

Lol least they aren't throwing themselves off the high chair like my youngest used to do. They will stop just have to be stern when correcting them. I would reverse psychology worked all the time. Even broke him of the binky by pretending to cry because I didn't have a big boy. Emoticon 4951
