I got a free flu shot yesterday at work.  By late evening, my throat was hurting.  Still does.  Coincidence?  I think not. 4951

....... Not coincidence. It blows my mind how many people think that a flu shot is a good idea. I've never had one, and I do not allow my daughter to have one. 4951

@lola:  The flu shot is a very mild case of the flu so that you build up a resistance to the full-blown flu.  It affects some people more than others.  The symptoms should go away in a few days.  You should still be good for your trip! 4951

I have gotten a shot twice in past 10 years and both times with in 3 weeks I had meningitis and on hospital lock down so I will stick with the flue this time. I wont get it for my kid either I dont think, even though she doesn't get sick from them, I will see how bad the season is on that decision. The reason I think it does that to me is the CDC doc said that it is not rare but a bit uncommon that some people carry the virus all the time in their blood, that automatically makes them get meningitis when immune system is down. The way he explained it is that if you have it 3 times in a decade for no apparent exposure reason they assume you have that in you already all the time but when under the weather for other reasons your more likely to get a full blown case like I do without being exposed or light exposure.I read somewhere that many flu vaccines have the meningitis mixture in it also which is actually protection for most but I believe it gives me an exposure.I can never get straight answers from the docs but Im smart enough to figure out that 3 weeks after both shots I almost died in the hospital that I aint getting a third.....LOL 4951

something else a doctor told me is that its not a for sure thing because they have to pre guess ahead of time what flue will hit us. They go to other countries that get it before our season and take data for months on what they believe we will get. They are not always correct and make the wrong vaccine. 4951

@Burnsway: Yup, they pick a few strains and hope for the best.  It's a complete stab in the dark.  Odds are that it won't help you prevent flu.  I've never had one and I've had the flu one time in my entire life.

@mgw300e: I got the flu the year before last and it hit my kid and I very very hard, cost us about 2 grand in care and meds so I let family talk me into it last year. They kept saying that it was just a coincidence last time I got meningitis so I listened to others instead of my gut, that gets me in trouble more than I care to admit.....LOLBut other than that I had not had the flu in about 8 years.a trick people....when flu season hits go get the emergen-c mixture that has extra Vitamin D......Vitamin D helps fight the exposure....A LOT....hubby was exposed at work and he never gets the flu but started feeling the symptoms and I had him down that stuff like crazy and with in 24 hours he had fought it off. Vitamin D is very important when exposed!Hubby drinks 2 gallons of milk a week and I truly believe that why he has never gotten it.......EVER

@Burnsway: EDIT: I don't want to be seen as prescribing anything to someone who isn't my patient.  Check out Mercola.com and search vitamin d.  There's an hour-long lecture on this subject.Interesting fact about vitamin D: You body will store excess vitamin D, as opposed to other vitamins that you pee out if taken in excess.  Because of this you could take a week's supply all at once without it being wasted

@mgw300e: what did I prescribe? or did you and changed it, post made me a little confused.....LOL....vitamin D and emergen-c are both natural products, it would be like me saying drink water when dehydrated, of course I would assume most are smart enough to know that if you have symptoms to go to the doc.

@Burnsway: No, I was talking about myself.  My original first paragraph was about high-dose vitamin D including dosages and I thought twice about it and changed it to the "edit" that you see now.
