Did you do one for your children's 1st birthday?  If so did you do a regular sugary cake or make a healthy one?I made a healthy one, just for for a trial run and it tasted ok but it was so thin.  My DD liked it, but it won't really do well for pictures. I think i will just make a smaller version of the traditional chocolate pound cake that has been in my family for years. Any photography ideas? 4951

What are smash cakes?

@fcabanski: found this description:
Most first birthday parties are celebrated with a cake, but smash birthday parties boast two cakes, a large cake and a single serving cake. The large cake is for the adult guests, and the second cake is for the guest of honor. Whereas guests eat their cake by the slice and usually employ a fork, your child will have a cake all to himself, no fork required. Once presented with his sweet reward, he's encouraged to attack it with his fingers, fists or face. This table-manners-be-darned approach results in a face full of frosting and cake crumbs, cake covered fingers and cake on the floor. It also inspires grins all around. 4951

i've been researching this! i think you could get away with whatever cake you want, then use a sugar free cool-whip. you can make it any color you want too. i plan on doing a basic yellow cake with sugar free cool-whip.  4951

Our grocery store back in Ohio included the smash cake free when you bought a sheet cake from them for the bday party. None of my boys really went all in for the smash cake. They just ate a little bit then didn't want anymore lol 4951

Mine just got a piece of the main cake because we were broke and it seemed silly to spend money on another cake. Granddaughter had a smash cake shaped like foofa from yo gabba gabba. She just ate the eyes off of it. 4951

Healthy for a birthday cake has never occurred to me. I am pretty sure that is breaking some law somewhere. 4951

Yeah, healthy? Really, one cake a year and at 1, she will eat little or none of it.

We did just a plain old boxed cake with icing. I did let my daughter smash it in her high chair. She liked it Emoticon If I could figure out picture sharing I would share one. 4951

For the first I made my own smash cake.  She wasn't diggin it at all.  For the second, I just did a big cupcake.

You could also do one of those bundtini cakes.  Not nearly as much frosting! 4951
