Hubby and I went thru drive-thru at Wendys in Atascocita. The girl at the window spoke no English and when he spoke to her she just smiled. Another woman had to come make change because we paid with cash. Unacceptable!! 4951

Yes that is. I would complain to the manager on this one. 4951

This happened to me at the Subway in Kingwood, up front by Spec's. I was not pleased at all. One had to translate my order to Spanish so the other one could make my sandwich. I'm sure there are plenty of English speaking teenagers in Kingwood to fill those positions, which makes me wonder if the manager is paying the Mexicans less than minimum wage. 4951

That's crazy. Takes guts to be in a country where you don't speak the language and work in the service industry. It would be really easy to just not work. I know a lot of teenagers who don't want to work. Heck, they don't even mow their parent's yard for extra cash. 4951

True, my order was correct. Albeit delayed due to the translating. If you're dealing directly with customers all day, and the great majority only speak English, you should know the basics. 4951

I admire anyone that speaks more than one language.  But people still learning should not be taking orders and making change.   Of course, there is also the possibility that she was playing the "no speak English" game just to avoid talking or to just mess with people. A friend has his house painted.  There were a few touch-ups needed, so the contractor sent a lone painter.  He acted like he spoke no English, but when their huge German Shepherd got out and ran at him, the guy yelled out "Hey, does this dog bite!?"  He suddenly spoke very good English! 4951

I guess times have changed? My first job was at Subway, when I was 16. What better jobs are teenagers able to take these days? 4951

@ET:  I think you're spot on.  A lot of today's teens are spoiled rotten, particularly in more affluent subdivisions not only here but around the country.  They wouldn't take a fast food job.  That's why a lot of service industry companies are forced to hire those that may not speak the language as well as some would like.  As another poster pointed out, you can't get a lot of these kids now to mow their parents grass.  So a lawn service does it.  And a lot those workers don't speak very good English either.

I guess times have changed? My first job was at Subway, when I was 16. I also started at fast food, but pretty promptly moved on....this job was most likely posted for hire, and the owner got the best he could for the money he pays.  Lot of kids don't want to work the long hours, crummy conditions and low pay of fast food.  Have no idea where they work now, most likely they don't.  4951

My first job was mowing lawns.  My second job was pumping gas at a service station, including cleaning the windshield and checking the oil.  How many people even remember those days? 4951

The deli counter @ WalMart Grocer on NP was notorious for awhile with non english speaking people. It would truly **** me off. I would complain everytime.  It would take some much longer. 4951
