Ok, I hate to rant here, but with the internet being so available to everyone now, why the heck won't the HOA change their views on an at home business??? The house isn't going to have people going in and out of it, there won't be a store front out of the home NOR will there be any advertising on the property either!!!  I have always TRIED to see the HOA as a necessary evil, helping to ensure that the property value won't go down on my house because they monitor how people keep their house/property looking on the outside....but when in the heck was it OK for them to tell me what I can/cannot do INSIDE my house when NO ONE is getting hurt nor bothered by it?!?!?!??!?!?! Cannot afford the rent on a store front anymore, so basically the HOA has KILLED my dream of running my own business, REAL "GOOD" job HOA people......in this economy when so many people are struggling, you all just helped kill another small business owner!!!! All because of a rule which was made WAY before internet sales were prevalent and they won't change or overlook in such a case as mine, and I KNOW I am not the only one in Kingwood they have hurt by this archaic thinking.Wish we could petition or something, because I think this is ridiculous. Any thoughts??? 4951

Mine is building custom AK-47's and/or AR's....folding and welding metal at home then shipping out to other FFL dealers....NOTHING scary nor bad......they know because the ATF required us to try to get a letter saying they were aware of the business, NOT that they approved or anything, just that they KNEW we were working from the house. They wouldn't give us that, so we had to get a rental place, which has put us in so much debt we can no longer continue and will have to shut our doors. Pretty sad considering we passed all of the ATF stuff (our FBI checks, our home inspection, etc.) all we needed was that letter.... 4951

Thought about it, but can't really afford to move now....not sure the house would sell quick enough to make a difference in our situation so it could be an exercise in futility, you know? 4951

@Retired_Engineer:

Not my kind of neighbor. Don't need that near me and that is why I live in a deed resticted area. Although we do have a "hot house" on our street that we have been complaining about for years and nothing has been done. The owner is a local childrens dentist but his daughter and all of her "friends for a day" live there. 4951

@Humbletexan1: Your situation and ours are TOTALLY different. We are not doing anything illegal nor are we a nuisance to any of our neighbors, so why should we be punished and have our livelihoods taken away from us?? If the FBI and the ATF feel that we are responsible enough to run this business and pose NO threat to anyone by doing so, why can't the HOA do the same??? That being said, I totally understand not wanting to have a bunch of kids doing drugs and bothering Emoticoneople, I wouldn't want that on my street either. 4951

@mm4731: It's actually spot welding, not the kind most think of when they think welding, there's not a bunch of sparks flying everywhere and whatnot. No more of an issue than having a fire in your fireplace and it crackling every now and then. I can assure you (and tried to assure them) that we are VERY cautious during the whole process, after all, we DEFINITELY don't want to burn our house down....just makes me really sad because we did everything right, this was the only snag.... 4951

Maybe you could find a cheap place to make an office somewhere to give your business an official address in porter/new caney. Then you could just take your "work home with you" every now and then 4951

I actually just created an online petition for it (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/reverse-hoa-ban-on-at-home-internet-businesses/) and have contacted Friendswood Development (who made all the original rules) to see if that can be changed. Keep your fingers crossed and sign the petition if you agree!!! Thanks for everyone's comments and for listening to me rant!! 4951

Find a family member or friend to front the business from their home.  Then do the work at home.  Nobody will know.  If there is a fire, however, your homeowner's insurance won't pay. 4951
