My adult son has decided he wants to learn to play a guitar.  He'd like a good,  used acoustic and has said Yamaha or Takamine brands would be perfect for him, at this point.  I've looked around a bit on here, the 'other' site and eBay and am overwhelmed!  Lots of varying prices and models.  Can anyone help?  I can't spend a fortune but would like to get him a good one. 4951

@Irispixies:  based on what I've seen so far, I can get one for around $100-$150.  eBay is selling much cheaper but then you have to consider shipping costs, so it's about the same as local pricing.  I think he thinks he doesn't need lessons...maybe his wife will convince him otherwise!  At least he's not continuing his trombone playing he attempted in high school band!  Geez!!!

Go to the pawn shop on 494 in Porter and negotiate.
I would probably stay away from the 100 dollar yamaha or takamine.
Also need to find out if he wants a classical or folk style guitar.  One has nylon strings and the other has steel strings. 4951

Any reason for a Yamaha or Takamine? Any guitar will do for a beginner, as you are building muscle and dexterity in the beginning..Save the money until he knows if he wants to be serious about playing. 4951

www.guitarcenter.com /Rogue-RA-090-Dreadn ought-Acoustic-Guita r-423794-i15220 bought this guitar to take lessons. It had good reviews and I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I think it plays fine and for the price you can't beat it. I have since bought a better guitar and keep this one as my...I don't care if it gets scratched...throw in the back seat, guitar. If you go to guitar center online and look at the ones under $100, there are a lot with good reviews that I'm sure will work for what he needs. 4951

Maybe find a teacher first, they should have some contacts so your son can get a decent used guitar.

@Fallon: I agree---but he's completely on his own now and has said a guitar is the only thing he wants for his bday.  It's up to him to pursue lessons....don't know when he'll find time.  He's got 4 kids!

The biggest issues you'll run into with cheap(er) guitars are action and tone.  For a beginner, tone really won't matter that much as long as it doesn't sound like WTF's Wal-Mart special linked above.  ;-)  Tone also doesn't necessarily follow price.  I have five acoustic guitars varying in quality of workmanship, age, and price and they all sound different.  Each has its own personality and fits a certain style of playing.Action is something you'll want to consider.  Action is a combination of things but in basic terms it is the height of the strings above the frets down the neck of the instrument.  If they are too high they can be very, very difficult to press hard enough to get a true tone.  If they are too low they'll tend to rattle when struck because they bump against a fret board when they vibrate.  If you look down the neck of a guitar and can see a "U" shape where the strings are close to the frets at each end and further away in the middle...just put the guitar down and back away.  A proper luthier may be able to fix a bowed neck but it's not something a beginner should be messing with.  The same is true if it is bowed closer to the strings in the middle.  If it's not straight, don't even bother with it.The saying about cheap guitars is "if you go cheap you'll buy your last guitar first".  That is to say that the experience will be so entirely frustrating that you'll eventually just give up.  My advice to him would be to do his homework, understand that it will take time to produce a quality sound, that his fingers are going to hurt before they callous, that it's going to get boring at some point, and to keep practicing! 4951

@Love2Run: Not speaking for @kingwooddiscgolf, but the general rule that you get what you pay for applies.  I have a $200 Yamaha that hangs on the wall and only gets played when I need an "extra" guitar or am looking for a specific sound.  To me it sounds "thin" and the action on it makes me feel like I'm arm wrestling the darn thing.
On the other side of that coin, I found a 1973 Yamaha FG-160 in a pawn shop for $35 about 20 years ago and other than my Taylor it's the best sounding guitar I have. 4951
