Ok,, I want to have an honest, fair opinionated debate. No fighting,, just want to see what people think.

Here is your story,,,
Paula Dean a well known cook and author, has been fired from the Food Network, for court documents stating that she has made racial and derogatory statements, in the past.

What is your opinion of this?? 4951

I am going to make the first volley....

In my opinion I beleive that in today's world, companies and people are jumping the gun to make accusations and conclusions without the whole story,,, ESPECIALLY WHAT THE PRESS PUTS OUT...  I dont know the whole story, so here is my arguement,  on what I know.

I think that the Food network jumped to his major conclusion, without taking several factors into account. She will eventually sue the Food netowrk, and win.

1. she admitted in a court document of saying such things, IN THE PAST.
question.. How many people do you know who have NEVER said a racial or derogatory comment EVER?
I will admit,,, I have, IN THE PAST

2. Not an excuse,, but look where she was raised, and her age.... I think she was RAISED a certain way, and that led to saying things IN THE PAST.

3. Has she said these comments, WHILE representing the FOOD network??? on tv, in public, etc....   I am not sure...

4. Is the food Network part of this lawsuit against her? Far as I know NO,,, so they are violating her privacy by getting involved,,, UP TO A POINT. This is based on her PRIVATE business,, not owned by the Food network.

5. Understanding that she is in the public spotlight and is a member of the Food netowrk, she is responsible to act and represent herself in a certain way. SO what is the basis of the firing,,, because she said somethign recently or in the past?
I work in a place that has regulations for my actions while at work and while not at work... However they cannot fire me for comments I made in the PAST,, unless I am under a criminal investigation... and I dont think Paula Dean, is not under a criminal investigatin involving the food network.

I'm not a fan of hers, but I hope she sues the food network and wins.

Drudging up something from someones past is pretty low. I could see if it came to light she was an active klansmen or something, but come on. 4951

Paula Deen got screwed. It is so overly PC to act all shocked about this, something she did in the past. It's ridiculous. Who can truly claim they have never said that word, or another racial slur? raghead, chink, jigaboo, etc etc. All the same as the N word. I also fall on the bandwagon of wondering why it is okay for black people to say it all day long but it becomes a heinous crime for a white person to say it.
And Food Network just lost a lot of fans. I hope Paula comes out of this unscathed. I adore her and her family.

The thing is most employees work on an AT WILL basis.  Meaning an employer can fire you for just about any reason as long as it doesn't violate federal law.  Texas for example prides itself on being an At Will State.  Secondly, I have heard people talk about the freedom of speech aspects.  Freedom of speech only guarantees that the government cannot restrict what you say, that same prohibition does not necessarily protect you when it comes to your employer.  That's how an employer can discipline an employee for saying or doing something "off the clock" if it believes that action has damaged the company or organization brand.  Now I'm no attorney, that's just my basic understanding.   Further one has to consider the contract Dean signed with Food Network.  Many companies, especially those that offer high salaries, have morality clauses in the contract.  Those basically state certain actions done by the employee that cause embarrassment to the company or organization entitle the entity to sever the relationship.   Emoticonaula Dean, like all public figures can have their Emoticonast or present actions be used against them at any point and time.  That's the downside of fame.  4951

For the press it is not even about Paula Dean, it is about ratings. 95% of news stories are not even worthy of being reported... that is until they find a way to make it controversial and then slander whoever they can to increase the ratings. News agencies battle each other to see who can be at the top. With the introduction of social media in the last decade or so, things have really started spiraling out of control. No one is safe as zero discretion is used when they put these stories together.  4951

Apparently, the racial slurs she used are in the RECENT past, not like it was 20-30 years ago.  She's being sued for a hostile work environment due to racial slurs, pornography on restaurant computers, etc.  As stated, the Food network doesn't need a reason not to renew her contract.  They probably could have immediately fired her.  If it wasn't for the Food network, she wouldn't be as popular as she is.  Paula will do OK through this. She may not make as much money, but she will still do OK.My father was 89 and he still used some slurs, but he knew it was unacceptable to do so where he could be heard.  Paula should have known better. 4951

When your in the public eye you have to watch what you say. I think she is getting what she deserves. After watching that video of her talking about the black guy and the black wall And the lawsuit against her I feel she is southern racist person. Im sure she has said the "N" word alot in her life. When she talked about her daddy and his workers leaving, you mean his slaves, omg she sounded so stupid. It's sad in this day and age people are still so racist. 4951

@2danes so is a souther racist worse than a northern racist? Racism is far worse in the NE.We have become a nation of wimps. People get offeneded by a slur and have to run and tell the media, the person loses their job or livlihood. This goes the same with all the anti-bullying nonsense too. We must be the only country on earth going throught this woosification. Meanwile we have 535 people in washington DC wrecking our country.Sadly more people know who Paula Dean is than their local elected official. Sad. 4951

Just to clarify...it is not against the law to be a racist. Its wrong, but not illegal.

People pay for past mistakes all the time in their present life. The question I would have is does what she believe have any effect on her job performance, including her public, work related persona. If the answer is yes, then she should have been fired. 4951

When schools were integrated in the south, the north was smug and said "It's about time".  Then the government said schools in the north must also integrate.  The whites in Boston rioted for a couple of years against integration.  They would have stopped any southern riots immediately!  Anyone that claims southern racism is worse than northern racism doesn't know their history. 4951

@BooBear:  Racism IS against the law when it's an employer being racist against an employee.  You should know this.THAT is why she is being sued and why the Food channel is not renewing her contract.

@Retired_Engineer:

Its only against the law if people carry those personal feelings into the workplace and use them to discriminate. Plenty of people are compete racist butttheads but have a good working relationship with people if different races.
People that think Mexicans do the best yard work are racist but they hire them and treat them well while they are working. 4951
