Silly this type of law had to be passed, but glad it did.http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/06/14/perry-signs-merry-christmas-bill-into-law/Maybe we can now go back and have "Christmas Concerts with Christmas Carols" at the end of the year instead of the worthless programs we have now. 4951

Lets celebrate Diwali and Eid and Yom Kippur too. Oh and let's not forget the Solstices Emoticon

It will be interesting to see how this law plays out. They are attempting the opposite stance in OK and that case may go to the Supreme Court.

Either way it plays out, somehow I get the feeling that you won't like the outcome. 4951

Until then it will be nice to see Merry Christmas in the halls of the school. Maybe here Silent night and little drummer boy at the Christmas program. This law will also save parents and school officials the embarassment of calling a Christmas Tree a holiday tree.   4951

If we took every reigious, or any other ethnicity day, as a holiday, or a special event,,,
we would be off EVERY day,, and be so busy planning parties and events, we could not do other things,,,

this country was FOUNDED on Christian values,,, which means we base our lifestyle on that,,, WE DO NOT take away from other religions,, ,and EVEN ALLOW other religions to have thier own private schools.

I say merry christmas, and pray at my schools, work, and other events,,, whats the big deal... If you dont,, then you are not forced to....

some day people will regret that....

as a kid, I was forced by my parents to go to church and pray,,, my dad didnt like to go,, but as I get older and he does also,, and now has healt problems,, you begin to realize, that maybe there is forgivness, and should believe, that your time is limited on this world...

so now i go back to church and beleive more 4951

If my child has to sit through an hour assembly about the religion of enivronmentalism (Magic School Bus earth program), then a 1 hr Christmas program seems only fair. 4951

Not this debate again......

No this country was not founded upon Christian values. That is a matter of opinion which has been debunked time and time again. There is no evidence supporting that it was founded upon any particular religion. The bill of rights tells us "congress shall make no law establishing a national religion, or prohibit free exercise therof", which means you are allowed to say "Merry Christmas" in schools or wherever you choose, the difference is when you are requiring people to follow a certain religion. This is just as much a Christian nation as it is a Buddhist nation or a Muslim nation. Religion and politics are kept seperate for a reason. And that reason is why the founding fathers were absolutely brilliant. At best, one could make a good arguement that the popular culture was shaped based on the majority of the citizens religious beliefs, but the country was designed to not force any religion on anyone and give them the freedom to worship or not worship as they choose. 4951

@KellyG might as well be. You have envirwackos that are worse than your average jihadist. My child had to sit an hour wathcing the MAgic School bus's earth program and hear how bad fossil fuels are. 90% of the kids parents probably work in the oil and gas industry and thy have to sit and listen to that bs. 4951

@TexINS:

You should do a little more research before you post. The same justice who made that opinion wrote this just a few years later:

Justice Brewer published a book in 1905, titled The United States: A Christian Nation, in which he disagreed with the interpretation of the court's decision as a statement or endorsement by the Supreme Court that the United States is officially in law a "Christian Nation":

These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation. 143 U.S. 457 (1892) [3]

But in what sense can [the United States] be called a Christian nation? Not in the sense that Christianity is the established religion or the people are compelled in any manner to support it. On the contrary, the Constitution specifically provides that 'congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.' Neither is it Christian in the sense that all its citizens are either in fact or in name Christians. On the contrary, all religions have free scope within its borders. Numbers of our people profess other religions, and many reject all. [...] Nor is it Christian in the sense that a profession of Christianity is a condition of holding office or otherwise engaging in public service, or essential to recognition either politically or socially. In fact, the government as a legal organization is independent of all religions. [4] 4951

@TexIns, it's not. You might not like the message but that doesn't make it a religion.

You shouldn't conflate the two. 4951

@PedroDePacas we are a Christian nation. When discussing the MAyflower and the pilgrims, I don't remember many Muslims, Jews, wiccans, athiests, etc on that boat. IS your source the dissenting opinion? The supreme court declared we are a Christian Nation.  4951

@TexINS:
No, the source I posted was from the supporting opinion who reconsidered his opinion in a book he later wrote.

Very care-full-y and slowly re-read the post for comprehension purposes.

And as far as the pilgrims and mayflower goes, they came here for religious freedom and settled over 170 years before we were even established as a nation. Many other religious groups came over and were radically different than the pilgrims. Some were even "gasp" jewish!

You didnt pay attention in school, did you? 4951
