Here’s something to ponder the next time you head to the loo: Only five percent of people wash their hands long enough to kill disease-causing germs. Translation: Ick.-Fifteen percent of men didn’t wash their hands at all, compared with 7 percent of women.-When they did wash their hands, only 50 percent of men used soap, compared with 78 percent of women.-People were less likely to wash their hands if the sink was dirty.-People were more likely to wash their hands if a sign encouraging them to do so was present. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asserts that while 50 percent of foodborne illness are caused by dirty hands, washing those hands is the best way to prevent disease from spreading―if you do it right. That means washing with soap and water for 20 seconds. The study found that most people wash, on average, for six seconds. 4951

@Jpgurl: You also need to wash any fruit or vegetables that you don't peel (apples, pears, tomatoes for example), as the person that put it on display at the store may not have washed their hands, or the person that picked it, packed it etc.  Most people think you get sick from meat that is not fully cooked, while it is usually because of something in the raw fruit or vegetables served with the meat (SALAD!).

Seems to me, if you used soap, there will be a residual left on your hands when done (mine smell good usually) that would precluded the 20 second rule say if you only went like 17 seconds. 4951

We have a woman at work who refuses to wash her hands when she leaves the rest room. She says she allergic to perfume, scented soaps yada yada.... and she has sanitizer at ther desk. Well A z z hole you have to open 3 doors to get to your desk!  I'm not usually a germaphobe but I do take paper towels to open the doors with.  Really this is only one of her many kookie problems, yep she's one of them. Doesn't play well with others. 4951

I can vouch for the 'men don't wash' thing.  I work in a facility that has separate bathrooms for men/women and am constantly having to add soap & paper towels to the dispensers in the women's restroom.  Rarely is the men's soap/paper towel dispenser even used!  I don't get it. 4951

@Annie: That's been tried, I truly believe she's just lazy & a lil' crazy.  She's about 60 y.o. +/- and she always talking Daddy does this, Daddy does that.  Well Daddy's dead! Been dead for years. She keeps us amused!

@buffaloglenn: Sooo true- I wash everything- even banannas- so I don't contaminate the bananna when I peel it
