Someone completely misunderstands you? I usually repeat myself, trying to speak as clearly as I can but sometimes I find myself in situations where I think there is a deliberate misunderstanding other options being 1.) I'm failing at communication and that can't possibly be Emoticon or 2.) I'm surrounded by idyuts.

Example, I'm at a birthday party this past weekend and they are passing around cake and Capri-Suns. I politely decline because I don't need all that sugar. People then start asking me if I'm diabetic. I tell them I'm not diabetic, I just don't need the sugar rush. Then people are talking about what I can do to reverse my diabetes. I repeat that I'm not diabetic. And that's where I get stuck. I think I'm clear I'm stating that I'm not diabetic but people continue to tell me about how I can eat cake again by switching to Splenda and asking me if I take insulin shots or if I need to go somewhere private to check my blood sugar.

What would you do? Do I say for the third time that I'm not diabetic? I just escaping by excusing myself to the ladies room.

Also, is it rude to decline birthday cake at a kids party?

What weird people lol. I HATE birthday cake, and before anyone ask no I'm not diabetic. Lol. I don't think it's rude to decline birthday cake at a kids party, I always say no. It's way to much sugar for me and just makes me feel all yucky inside, now if you're offering me some ice cream then yea please lol 4951

@KellyG:  I am diabetic, and if someone gets too personal or won't leave it alone, I tell them that it's a personal issue and I change the subject.  Or if they keep asking, I ask them "Why would you want to know that?" Or I turn it around and start asking them real personal questions about their health.  Asking a guy when was the last time he had a prostate exam, or asking a woman about her menstrual cycle or post-menopausal symptoms usually does it.  Emoticon 4951

I think it's against the law in Texas to hate birthday cake. 4951

People don't always listen to the whole thing being said. They catch a word or two and jump to the place in their head where they store pieces of knowledge and unwanted advice.  In you case, they used the key words "don't need sugar" and launched into their spiel about diabetes. When people go some direction I don't want to go, or I try to clarify but it falls on deaf ears, I just drop the subject and have nothing more to say.  The one sided convo fizzles out pretty quickly, usually.  4951

When they don't hear after repeating your self. Then its time to change the subject to Sex Toys!  That will either get the party started or people will avoid you.  EmoticonI say no to grocery store cake too, its crap!  I know i use to work  at Randalls and Albertsons bakeries in high school and college. 4951
