Never had a M-I-L, she died when my husband was about 10 or 11. Hardly knew my F-I-L, he remarried in the late 1980's to a witch. But they lived many miles away, so I only met her about 3X. My husband was close to ex-in laws, so i knew them & we all got along. They came to my wedding! 4951

I got along with my MIL before she passed.  I didn't care for the guilt trips she would pull on DH or the small town ignorance sometimes but i just learned to grin and bear it or like @fallon said have a few drinks.  my DH got along great with my mom before she passed.  I wish i had gotten along better with her in my teenage years but i guess that is fairly normal.   4951

I got along well with my MIL. She lived in CA.  I get along great with my FIL, but wouldn't if we lived close.  He lives in AR.  Both my wife and I had some problems with my mom, but we both loved my dad.  He treated her like  a daughter. 4951

I've had several 'sets' and can honestly say I got along pretty well with most of them.  One MIL was a real challenge but I learned how to 'grin and bear', since it wouldn't have been in my best interest to put my DH in the middle.  After the divorce I fantasized for the chance to speak my mind, but the opportunity never arose.  Probably best that way.  Emoticon    PS - I'm engaged again but the advantage now is we're so old there won't BE any in-laws!  4951

I get the feeling I am not who my in laws would have picked for their son.My DH can't stand my parents but the feeling is mutual for the most part.  They mainly just grin and bear each other for my DD's sake. 4951

I tolerate my MIL. My FIL and I have a love hate relationship, we live to hate each other but by being honest about our feelings we actually get along great. He calls me daughter in law and I call him father in law. I am really not sure if he even knows my name. I adore michaels grandmother. We use to hang out talking bad about my MIL/ her DIL. It was great. 4951

Fil is a handful.  Mil I love.  When my fil passes I am bringing her here to live with us.I love my mom but couldn't have her living with meEmoticon  I wasted a lot of years not liking my mil.  But at the end of the day if you are planning on staying married, just suck it up and put on a smile.  She can't be all bad, she raised the man you married.  And trust me I had to repeat that phrase a LOT in the early years.  Life is just way easier when you can get along.  Sometimes you have to drink a lot or eat a lot when you are around them, but hey that isn't a bad thing either.  Just do what you can, and smile at her knowing you will probably be the one picking out her nursing home.

@Fallon:

Whoa! There's a big difference between sucking it up, putting on a smile, learning how to get along, etc. and moving the MIL in with you! In my experience, I defintitely practice the former (as does everyone else..she's kind of awful), but the thought of the latter makes me want to stab myself in an eye socket with something red-hot and sharp! I love telling my mil how it has taken me 21 years to undue the damage she caused him. She had him convinced he was allergic to POODLES! No other type JUST poodles. My family has poodles, it took me a couple of years to convince him it would be OK to be around them. She says he must have outgrown it. Whatever. 4951
