Ok, my 3 year old is getting a filling  - (tooth deformity in the back not because we don't brush)
Anyway.. my husband just told me he won't be allowed to go back during the filling.  They are going to 'sedate" her with some juice.. apparently and when she gets super sleepy, take her back for the filling.
Am I being super paranoid to *not* want her to go alone?
Granted, I have not been to the dentist office myself, only my husband has, and he thinks it will be OK. But I'm still nervous. I don't want her to be scared for life about the dentist.
What do you think? 4951

I would demand to go back there to make sure she was ok. Once I felt everything was ok, I might step out of the room. My kid, my money, my rules or find someone else. 4951

My sister is a dental assistant and they will allow a parent to be back there, but try to do it without the parent. If the child sees the parent is in there "to make sure everything's ok" it can freak them out even more. But if the dentist won't let you back there and you want to be then def find a new dentist. 4951

FIND A NEW DENTIST. Emoticon

They're out there, not all dentist (pediatric or otherwise have this crazy policy). It's shifty, IMO, not to let a parent back with their small child, especially for something as benign as a filling. I say RUN. 4951

When we lived in Dallas our dentist didn't allow parents back there and my kids were just fine.  I think it's worse for the kids if the parents are back there.  If they go back by themselves with no problem, I wouldn't worry about it.  The dentist or assistant will keep you updated.  4951

I understand them not wanting the parent there for just a check up when the kid is awake because kids are usually more cooperative but if the child is sedated then what is the reasoning behind not allowing the parent back there? 4951

No way any decent responsible dentist would not allow a parent with their child.

RUN away and find a real dentist.

And no way as a parent would I ever allow that.  Too many really good dentists in our area for us to have to deal with that bs.   I am appalled that any parent would allow this.
@Fallon: I am appalled at this as well, but it seems to be the norm lately. I don't know if it's parents being "afraid" to stand up to the almighty dentist ( Emoticon ), indifference, lack of education/knowledge or just laziness in terms of taking the time to find a good, caring dentist who has both the patients' AND their parents' best interest at heart (no one take that the wrong way...not referring to anyone specifically here, just in general. Ugh. The stock internet "disclaimer"... Emoticon ). There are some parents who are perfectly comfortable sending their babies back with virtual strangers for procedures, but there are some who are not, and the latter who voice their concerns only to be told, "Sorry! Policy!" should seriously think about the intent of their care provider, IMO.

Also, just because you have young children doesn't mean you have to succumb to the pediatric dentists' ridiculous "rules"...there are plenty of great, caring family dentists who will see your child and let you make the call as to what's best for YOUR child.  In my personal experience, the majority of pediatric dentists just herd the kids in and out of there like cattle and they have grown completely indifferent to their patients' parents' needs/concerns.   Emoticon

Dime a dozen, folks! Emoticon
