My daughter will be one in August and I know it's a little early but I am trying to think of ideas for a party. Nothing too expensive. It's gonna be hot so some indoor ideas would be great too.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would just have family over, BBQ and have some cake. That's what we did with both of ours. Had done friends too but nothing huge. Wanted people special and close to us around to celebrate. 4951

IMO the first birthday have the people that are closest to your nino come celebrate. Have a nice lunch, reflect over the past year and how much you have grown as a family. Keep in mind she is one and most likely will want to take a nap in the middle of her party. Also keep in mind, this particular party is for you and DH more then her, so don't stress out! Believe me...there are plenty more of birthdays to stress over. Take lots of pics, they will be fun to display next year Emoticon 4951

@mpjp0907:
She likes Barney. But I don't want to torture the adults with Barney decorations.
She likes animal books and a couple girly books about tutus and princess baby. She loves books in general.

I was thinking since it will be sweltering hot. An ice cream bar would be cool.
And maragaritas for the adults.
Food, not sure maybe the old hot dogs and hamburgers routine but with some good toppings to add.

Entertainment is were I am stuck? 4951

@N+T: Maybe an animal themed party then?  The adults wouldn't mind that too much.

Now this is the tricky part! Once you introduce activities of any sort to a first birthday, you have to take into consideration the guest over her age. Say she has majority 4-9 year old cousins the likely hood of them doing anything she would find remotely entertaining or vice versa is going to be hard to come by. If you hire anyone in a costume she will most likely freak out, but you still have pay. Then you start getting into stuff like balloon people, and what not and you don't want strangers around for her first birthday. This is all just from my own personal experiences though. 4951

Exactly! Invite immediate family and sponsors/God Parents. If she's involved in a playgrou, just being an appropriate treat to the meeting nearest her birthday in celebration. Nothing fancy, they are too young to really care. 4951

@4psychos: wasn't really thinking about hiring anyone.  Usually, we do karaoke or yard games at parties.  Just not sure about outdoor stuff in August.  There will be teenagers, a one year old and a couple 5 year olds.  Maybe i could do a blow up water slide rental or purchase one.  I am sure it will get used in the future.

If there will be kids, maybe think about getting a moonwalk, or moonwalk/water slide combo for your backyard.  That will keep any kids/or young at heart adults entertained.

We had our daughter's first birthday party at Old MacDonald's Farm, which was fine, and pretty easy on the wallet.  But, it was in April, and it was windy.  I couldn't imagine doing it there in August- waaaaay too hot and humid- people would probably be miserable!

We just celebrated her second birthday at home, and it was probably twice as much money because we got a bunch of food/drinks/a candy buffet and rented a moonwalk and tables/chairs.  It was a really good time though, but a LOT of work.  The crazy thing though, is the moonwalk didn't see as much action as I thought it would.  All the kids were more interested in the upstairs playroom, our dogs, the bearded dragon, and the candy buffet!

We didn't do anything specific for the adults, but everyone was entertained enough with each other's company and the wine and beer. 4951
