We have a 'rescue' border collie.  We have had her for 4 years now, she is about 5 years old.  She has always been a sweet dog, but so untrained when we first got her.
But in the past year or so all our working and training has really paid off.  She isn't a total model citizen yet, she still wants to jump up on everyone who enters our door, but she can be verbally controlled.  And she won't ever dart out the front door even when opened and she is encouraged to come out.  Unless I walk out first and call to her she won't leave the house.  Amazing progress.  But......it is a daily training.  Constant reinforcement, constant praise for good behavior etc etc.
But......I have had many dogs in my lifetime; and I have learned to many new things about how to train a dog.  It is all on us folks, the humans have the ability to learn new things and then to train the dogs.  Our Bella is a wonderful example; such a great dog.  We are blessed.
So your dogs don't have to be confined all the time; just get with a good trainer and learn how to teach your dog whatever it is that you want them to learn.  Remember consistancy and praise work wonders.  You too can do this.  Good luck. 4951
