Which vet in the area offers the best price on dog dentals.  I have two chihuahuas that need dentals.  Not interested in Kingwood VCA as I paid them $407 four years ago just to polish teeth on a chihuahua and the All Community Vet charges me over $500 on another chihuahua's dental. Surely there is a reasonable vet in this area????

@doddlebug:

February is Pet Dental Care Month and most vets give great discounts. If I had the money I would've definitely done it for all 3 this last February. Emoticon

It's important. For people and pets. Tooth infections can spread to the brain and cause death.

Years ago Dr. Burns charged $250, not sure about prices now. It's a little bit of a drive, off feeder road of Beltway 8 between Wallisville and Woodforest. Worth a call?

I once got a ridiculous quote from All Community, I ended up going to the nice lady vet on 1960 over the bridge next to Dairy Queen. I'm sorry but I drawing a blank on the name  of the vet. She was hundreds of dollars cheaper. She's a very good vet but it's a little far to travel.I just found her in the business directory:

VCA quoted DW  over 700 for my 6 pounds chi.  She needed a tooth removed and even though her teeth had minor plaque they said while she was already out it would be best to do it.   I did not have them do it.  Instead she brought her to 494 animal hospital and it was right at 300 or a little under for everything.   Anesthesia, tooth out, cleaning and polishing, after care.  4951

Would never use 494 Vets.  Had an awful, awful experience with them.  Never again.Call Porter Vet.  They are so reasonable and the Vet there is wonderful.

@Fallon: I love 494 vets. Maybe they were having a bad day when you were there?

No the vet we saw should not have a license.  I immediately left and went to another vet that did take care of exotics, and they were just appalled at that vet.  My guinea pig was 5 1/2 years old and the 494 vet was insisting on doing surgery on her.  The avg life span is 5 to 6 years.  She was too old to have had surgery.  She would not have lived thru it.  I went to Porter Vet, and they actually called in a specialist for me.  The vet said it would be beyond irresponsible to operate on a guinea pig that old.  She would have most likely died had we done so.  Then had a friend go there 2 weeks ago, and she had an awful experience with the vet and vet tech.  She left and said she would never go back there again either. The waiting room was full when I was there, and the people there said only good things about the place.  But I will never go back there again.  They weren't my normal vet, but my vet does not see guinea pigs.  I did go by and see my vet after our experience there, and they couldn't believe the way 494 vet handled things either.  When we got our bunny, we started using the Porter Vet for him.  And they are just a great group.  I still use my regular vet for our dog, but I am thinking about switching to Porter.

@Fallon:

Which doc did you see? Mueler (wrong spelling) dori, or bobbe the new one. I have heard of issue with the new one Bobbie sue to lack of experience and we always ask to see one of the other two. With any vet or personal doctor you will get varying opinions. Since 494 is an exotic animal vet maybe they have had success in the past with operating on old pigs. Maybe their ideal is to always offer something to people. Last time I was there I over heard dr mueller talking to another client about their animal telling them he does not like to operate unless there is more than a 20 percent chance that it will work. He sounded sad that he could not offer any solutions. Many people are so attached to their pets that If you say their is nothing to do and they go elsewhere and hear different it looks bad. I think yourself the right choice in your situation.
The mrs. Has told people doctors no in the past and she would tell a vet the same after hearing all the options. 4951

@Fallon  I have heard things before about Dr. Dori.  I think there are issues with all vets though and we have have to do some thinking for ourselves like you did.  I was told by VCA that my dogs was in pain and needed the 700 plus dollar tooth deal the very next day.  The Mrs thought they were trying to rush us so we wouldn't realize we were getting taken.  We brought her to 494 and they said it was not causing her pain and scheduled for the following week.  No matter where people go for their animals or for themselves they have to bring a little common sense.   The wife saw an RA doctor who said he was not sure if she had RA but wanted to put her on the medications for it (steroids).  She told him no and he looked at her like no body had ever questioned him before.   LOL 4951

We now take our dogs to the 494 Hospital and are extremely pleased with the two doctors we have seen.  Dr. Dori got the problem solved with my 10 1/2 year old chihuahua's gastro issues.  I have seen her with my other pets and she is extremely good and very knowledgeable.  Dr. Muller just did an emergency pyometria spay on our german shepherd and the outcome was excellent.  He even kept her through Easter weekend and checked on her, ect.  I have shown dogs for 34 years and have used various vets over the years and have complete faith in the care that my dogs are receiving at Loop 494 Hospital. The vets, staff and techs are outstanding and definitely care for the animals.  As they say, there is always two sides to the story . . . . 4951

Total apologies to original poster for highjacking this thread ..... just had a few comments to add. Just thought I would chime in, I know this is about teeth cleaning, but there seems to be quite a bit on here about 494.  I know there are a lot of very loyal 494ers on here, and that is the reason we took our poodle there.  We didn't have any problems with him being seen quick, they were very friendly, never had a problem.  Fast forward a year when we adopted our rescue Labradoodle who was about 15lbs underweight, very malnourished and scared of everything.  We got her in and had a full work up done, we knew she had worms, had been spayed, and ear mites, (per the rescue) and wanted to have the vet tell us what we were looking at as far as treatment went.  The rescue told us they had tested her for heartworms and she was negative  - (they had only had her for a few weeks when we adopted her) - So when we took her in and Dr Bobbie called me telling me she had a full load of heart worms and shame on me for not getting her in sooner, I was absolutely dumbfounded.  I was speechless when he continued to blame me for her heartworms and told me I should have had her on a preventative sooner.  WE JUST GOT HER a few weeks before !!!  He made me cry ! Then he told me we would need to do the high risk treatment for her - I asked him if it was his dog, what would he do, he said the expensive high risk treatment.  This poor dog was so unhealthy, my husband and I went for a second opinion somewhere else b/c we felt for sure it would kill her if we gave her that treatment.   We go back this month to have her rechecked and I pray she is better, we have been doing the non invasive heartgaurd route & I hope it has worked.    We are also considering switching vets b/c my dog gets very car sick and driving to Atascazoo made her puke everytime (and I wasn't very happy w/ Atascazoo either) , I was looking for somewhere affordable here in kingwood -  problem is, 494 is just that, the most affordable & the closest ...  If anyone has any ideas about where to go - please pass it on !!  I'm looking into Glade Valley --- but they seem a little pricey too.  Where exactly is the Porter Vet?  ** Sorry to completely highjack this thread !!  ** 4951
