@Retired_Engineer: This is not a law, and it is not necessarily true. Â It is a very common misconception though. Â I also thought it was a law, but a lawyer told me it's not. Â He was representing my DD who rear-ended some idiot who squeezed in front of her, then hit the car in front of him which had stopped for the light, and she (DD) then hit him. Â Â
@SandyKnee: There are always exceptions but from experience, if you hit someone in the rear, you're probably going to be at fault. My son experienced one of those exceptions. He was stopped in a line of cars at a stop-light, an illegal immigrant ran into the back of a car behind my son, which then hit my son's car, and his hit the car in front of him, etc. Of course, the illegal immigrant did not have insurance. The cop wrote him several tickets, but didn't arrest him. Fortunately, no cars were significantly damaged and the cop told everyone they would have to work out any repairs with their own insurance.
