My husband and I are going on 3 full day/4night trip to DC sometime soon and I was wondering what are some must see attractions. I see there's lots of things to do while there but I know there is no way we'll be able to see it all. Any recommendations on what I absolutely can't pass up on? 4951

@topaz: Smithsonian, Holcaust Museum, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetary and watch the Changing of the Guard and JFK Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Capitol, White House tours closed.  Good time of year to go is late April early May.

be prepared to walk,,, everywhere,,,,
call your congressman or senator, and ask for a tour of their work

if you plan on the washinton monument,, YOU MUST be there at 0600 to get tickets,,, they will sell out quick

there is a bank or shopping center right around the museum for news papers,,, go in there,, you can to up to the bell tower,,, its a better view than the washington monument can give you

go see where Lincoln was shot.

ride the subway

oh,, and you must go to Arlington,,, see the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, and the changing of the guard....  if you are lucky,,, well not really lucky,,, but you may actually see a military funeral. The precession is awsome,, and sad,, but the respect is unbelievable,, at that place..

Take the metro to Georgetown & do some shopping on M Street. While you're there you can see the steps from the Exorcist!
Check to see when the Cherry Blossom Festival is & try very hard to go to it!!! It's so gorgeous (and smells so good) when the cherry blossoms bloom.
Walk around some of the monuments but don't get too caught up to see every single thing, it's really not possible.
I really enjoyed the natural history museum & the botanical garden for touristy things. 4951

When I lived in Virginia, I spent 5 years commuting to D.C. almost everyday (I worked on Pennsylvania Ave).  It's a wonderful city with so much to do.  4 days is definitely not enough time to see all that the city offers, but you should definitely see the Museums at the Smithsonian, take a picture in front of the White House, visit Arlington Cemetary, Ford's Theater, and if time allows, Harper's Ferry is about an hour - hour and a half drive out to West Virginia.  You can get pretty much get anywhere via the D.C. Metro, which I think is pretty easy to understand, and Georgetown is neat too.  And if they are in town, catch a Capitals game (hockey).  Go CAPS!  The new ballpark is nice too- go catch a Nationals game.  I got to go when they first became a team, and also got to go see them play in their new stadium which is really nice. 4951

Will you be staying in D.C. proper?

Oh, and I forgot- the Crime and Punishment museum is quite cool.  The zoo is fantastic, but very hilly.  Don't waste your time at the National Aquarium - It sounds impressive, but it's really just a basement full off fishtanks. 4951

If you like the Air and Space Museum on the Mall, you will LOVE the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport. Among the aircraft housed there is the Enola Gay, the Space Shuttle (that was stolen from us) and SR-71 and more. I walked around with a huge smile on my face! 4951

The subway system is the cleanest, easiest and safest-feeling I've ever been on. We got a week-long pass for less than $100 and used it everywhere we went, which was a ton of places. It goes pretty much everywhere you care to go.The place I would recommend going is definitely Arlington. The changing of the guard is not to be missed. 4951

The cherry blossom festival should be going on now, if not, within the next couple weeks. It's incredable! 4951

@SeeVee: We used to live right down the street from there!  Anyway, they also have an I-Max theater, and if there is a big blockbuster out they might show it there, and you can see it in the evenings.  When the Batman movie came out (the one with Heath Ledger) I went and saw it, and it was pretty amazing.  The only bummer is that you can't bring any food or drinks in there- major bummer- I love popcorn with my movies! 4951
