With all due respect - what's with placing crosses all over town to denote the exact spot someone was killed?Every time i leave my driveway I have to look at a large cemetery type cross placed on community property in the middle of Kingwood drive. There are 8 or 10 such 'monuments' that I've seen recently, and IMO this is getting a little ridiculous! I certainly understand that the loss of a loved one is a grievous situation, however it is also - or 'should be' a personal one.  If you should feel the need to create a remembrance dedicated to a friend or family member lost in a local car accident - how about erecting a large  monument in YOUR front yard?Where does it end? ~When in years to come there are a couple hundred of these 'monuments' placed strategically all over town?~Is it okay for anyone & everyone to place large religious symbols on public property these days? It's odd that in a community with HOA's that require signatures and permits to have a swing in your yard turns a blind eye to digging holes and erecting crosses on PUBLIC property. 4951

This is the only place I've lived that did this. I don't particularly like it. It's the worst loss a human being can experience, that of a child.I would REALLY like to know how the families of the deceased feel about this..I wouldn't want it if it was me. Yet I realize some really like the idea, the reminder, and the warning to drive safely.I would probably err on the side of what the family's  feelings are on the issue. No one can know that type of grief unless they have experienced it..I would honor their wishes. I understand it's on public property and in the view of all residents so i get those who think it should be in a private place, they do have a point.Maybe leave it there for 90 days and then return the momentos to the family? 4951

Those have been going up since I was in high school a number of years ago. They use to just be for victims of drunk drivers now it seems they are put up for everything. The families put them up then eventually stop maintaing them when they have began to move forward. If people are offended by just the sight of a cross, I dont know what to tell your overly sensitive self. 4951

They do this in Ohio too. 3 marines were killed in a horrific car accident at a major intersection and there's a huge memorial for them there. 4951

I live in Kentucky now, but for 5 years lived in Kingwood Texas, There are a few crosses & flowers along the interstate where people have been killed , but I have not noticed any along the public streets yet , but Iam sure as the weather gets better they willl start to appear here. I guess this is one way a friend or family member has of sharing their loss so others will know that a loved & cared for member of the family has passed on . With that being said ....when my cousins son was killed in a horrible car wreck several years ago we did not put flowers or a cross at the spot where Tim died. Instead we sent them to the funeral home & every so often his mother will place flowers on his grave . I think placing the crosses or flowers along the road is another way of using their "freedom of speech".Thank God we still live in a country where we have the right to do that .So as long as they do not place the flowers & crosses in your yard don't worry about it. Just ignore them like everyone else does(LOL). 4951

IT's difficult to ignore when every-time I come out of my house the first thing I see is a 4' white cross. Why do I need to be reminded 25 times a day that somebody hit the tree on the corner and died? Now for example if it's  who has passed that we're honoring...is there any problem with me putting 58,282 crosses in the park to honor those who severed our country in Vietnam? Or how about placing 6,656 crosses next to the 'Kingwood' fountain to honor killed in Iraq?Is it a matter of 'freedom of speech' ? That's rather debatable - I have no problem with someone erecting a memorial in THEIR yard, however placing a large religious symbol on 'government' Emoticonroperty is a matter of separation of church & state. Regarding "If people are offended by just the sight of a cross, I dont know what to tell your overly sensitive self."-How about a couple dozen stars of David, some statues of Budha, KKK pendants and a few dead chickens for the VooDoo that some DO?...and to 'lighted up Frances' ~ keep putting 'em up Skippy! The homeless down by the lake can use the firewood!  4951

Maybe the family wants to send a message to tipsy or reckless drivers that *real* people *really* get killed when others are irresponsible. If one person slows down or decides not to drive drunk because the cross reminds them of the implications of doing so, then it's worth it. Don't you all think? I do. 4951

I see markers all the time in my travels with my job. It is a solemn reminder for me to respect those who have perished and are no longer with us on this earth. May we pray  for the souls that have passed on and hope it never happens again. 4951

~The government also doesn't place nativity scenes in public parks yet many churches that use to, have been forbidden to do so 'on public land'.The government doesn't put the Christian cross or the Star of David in public schools  yet they demand them removed BECAUSE of the constitutional guaranteed separation of church & state.I think I could honor those who died for my freedoms to utilize those freedoms as intended. I believe I have just as much right NOT to have a religious symbol that I may not agree with,  forced on me...and be taxed to pay for the land it's erected on.  Let's not forget - one persons rights only go as far as infringement on someone else 's.Does it 'make some think' - - yeah maybe...I tend to think you have to be some special  kinda of stupid to hit a tree on straight 4 lane blvd with a 35 mph speed limit. If you want to make a statement about drunk drives how about supporting MADD, or giving lectures to the local high school students regarding the perils of such?My 'complaint' is that it's trailer park tacky, it's inappropriate and insulting to my personal religious beliefs...I wonder how many would feel it's 'no big deal' to step out their front door and see a 4 foot high religious symbol that's in direct conflict with their beliefs, placed on public land by people that DON'T have to look at it 25 times a day...every day.I'm just making an editorial comment here, who knows perhaps one day a friend of mine will slam into the light pole in front of 'your' house...it's comforting to know many of you wouldn't mind me hanging a huge religious monument on that pole for the next 10 years or so, just to remind YOU that things like that  can happen.  4951
