I would send her with some of both.  For the cash she would have to go to money exchangers, the debit card would automatically calculate the exchange rate but may charge a small percentage for overseas usage.  When opening the card make sure they put a note on the account of where she will be traveling and the dates.  Make sure to get her a pocket that goes on the inside of her clothing to carry  most of her money.  Two examples/ typeshttp://www.amazon.com/Braza-Secret-Stash-Travel-Pocket/dp/B003G5P074/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1364198675&sr=1-4&keywords=hidden+money+pockethttp://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Travel-Undercover-Hidden/dp/B0054IH9UC/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1364198675&sr=1-1&keywords=hidden+money+pocket 4951

My daughter just for back from Japan and they were told not to use a debit card but a credit card. We sent her with both cash (she exchanged at the airport) and a credit card.

As for how much its up to you depending on what they have to pay for and how much you want them to spend. 4951

I have a friend who travels to China 3 to 4 times a year (her mother lives there) and she says NO WAY to a debit card.  According to her the best way is credit card or cash.  I personally would not use a debit card out of my local area especially with how easy it is to "snatch" the numbers these days. 4951

Are her meals included? That would determine how much extra she needs. 4951

my hubby goes to China 4 times a year & he says he prefers using his credit card as they do all the calculations for him & it elimates money exchanges while he is there . Just be sure to go with a major credit card , not American Express as there are alot of places that will not take American Express. Also ...if she has any food allergies be sure to tell her to watch what she eats & ask what it is before eating anything . 4951

A
VISA or Mastercard credit card would be the best bet.   Like @KrishtiH
said, you most likely will not be able to use a debit card there at all.
Debit card is fine. If you use a debit card that is Visa or Mastercard, you shouldn't have a problem in Asia buying at stores or using ATMs. (I use only debit cards over there). They are using the same network as the credit cards.  I doubt prepaid will work though. Even if you do cash, it might be nice to have a debit card in case of emergency. Just a warning, though, they'll often charge a $5+ fee each time you use an ATM...so it's better to take out $200 than $20 at a time. 4951
