HI! We just moved here, and we walk our dog almost every day. We always pick up if she goes in a yard while on our walk, but she also likes to just sniff in grass. I recently had a neighbor - I have never met - yell at me for letting my dog walk on the edge of his grass. She didn't go in his yard, and I was holding a bag the entire walk...kind of my way of letting people know I will pick up if need be.Now when I see people walking I almost want to warn them about that neighbor. So what is the etiquette here if there is no sidewalk? Should I just take my dog and the bag to public areas? 4951

Sounds like that neighbor is just a tool. Probably just avoid his yard and don't really worry about it too much. If you're carrying a bag, I don't really get what his issue was. 4951

City of Houston ordinance is $500 fine for failure to pick up dog poop.  That's good that this lady is complying; so many KW dog walkers just let their dogs poop all over people's lawns. 4951

It really isn't a big deal to pick it up, either...especially if it helps everyone be happier with their neighbors! 4951

One of my old neighbors used to let their dog poop on other people's yards...and would just stand there if they were even outside. SO, We all got so tired of it we just would scoop it up and put in front of their door, or just throw it in their driveway....It worked eventually. they finally stopped letting it happen. 4951

We don;t have sidewalks either.  We take bags but our dog doesn't poop anywhere but our backyard.  We live in a quiet neighborhood and I just walk my dog in the road.  When a car comes, I do go onto the side street/neighbor yards to let the car pass.  4951

I really do encourage/time my dog to go in her own back yard, but she's a dog, and sometimes she surprises us...that's why we always take a bag. If we stop for any reason, she is going to try to go - she's a dog.Poop on the porch - wow! You have more guts than I do!I can certainly see why people wouldn't want the dog going in their yard even if it is picked up...it surely leaves something behind. No one wants to step in anything! I understood the guy not wanting the dog walking in his yard...but we had just moved in and practically live across from him. Tact would have been nice, like, "Hi, I'm John Smith. Are you new? ...We're kind of picky with our lawn and really don't want people letting their dogs walk in our yard." That would have been all it would take.Tact. A lost art. 4951

when we lived in Kingwood & walked our 3 poodles we always took several bags with us , we never knew what to expect (LOL) . Our neighbors dog always pooped in our front yard & he always came over & cleaned it up . We had really good neighbors & we miss them now that we live 1200 miles away in Ky. But our poodles now have a full acre of land to play on instead of a postage stamp size yard & they poop where ever they want to  & once a week I take my bag & rubber gloves & pick it all up & it goes out with the trash on Monday morning. It's a shame you have a rude neighbor living so close to you . But the old saying goes ..."kill them with kindness" , so take him over some homemade cookies ( everyone loves cookies) & say , "I'm sorry my dog walked on your grass , I hope you will accept these cookies as my apology ....make him feel like the a-- hole that he is (LOL). Just my way of "taking care of business" & turning the other cheek. 4951

Next time your neighbor is outside bring your dog over to meet him to break the ice. I gave my neighbor the stink eye once for letting his dog poop in my yard. The next day I saw him I went to talk with him and his little dog just looked at me with those big brown eyes. Well, next thing you know we are talking abouthis pooch. We walk with a bag and always clean up after the dog. I usually walk the dog early in the morning so its still dark. 4951

We don't sidewalks either, and some pickup and some don't.Just like the green belt, some have them on a leash, some don't.But even without sidewalks there is a public easement (I think) bordering the roadways. 4951

To answer OP's question, the etiquette is to stay near the curb and not let your dog step foot in anyone's yard.

If the inevitable happens, be sure to pick it up and take it with you.

If walking on a greenbelt, your dog is free to go anywhere he pleases. Just be sure to pick it up then, too.

As you've found, a lot of people don't care if you step into their yard, as long as you leave it clean, but others can be a bit more uptight about it. 4951

@DiverDude: does that mean you pooped a squirrel, or you pooped *like* a squirrel?
