@Pharlap @mpjp0907 got in touch with the wild outdoors today. We had a long walk on the trails behind Lonestar College.  There was danger! There was drama! There were fire ants! It was very exciting! I walk away with today's experience with this tidbit of knowledge: Butterflys are ******s. 4951

@Pharlap  You are just jealous because I fearlessly braved the fallen tree bridge to avoid being swallowed up by the torrents of deadly rapids below me as the log swayed beneath my feet.  And because I only ended up with one wet foot.@Annie You'll have to ask @mpjp0907.  4951

@mpjp0907:

Did you try wearing brightly colored clothes to attract them?

Have you seen any monarchs yet? My mom usually has around 100 hatch at her house. No sign of catepillars on her plants yet. 4951

Nope not a one. Alot of swallowtails tho. I'd love to have a Catapiller from your moms if she wouldn't mind. The kids are dying to hatch a butterfly 4951

I will see what I can do for you.

Till then, go to the local nursery (I like Natius) and buy some butterfly weed. Watch for little tiny worms at first. As they munch on the plant, they will grow to the size of your pinky or a bit bigger before they create their cocoon.

I've found a cool "bug keeper" at a high end toy store that worked nicely to serve as a "condo" when we wanted to watch the cycle closely. I will look for a link. 4951

If Natius is out, Warren's on NP generally has it but is usually a bit more expensive. It isn't a very expensive till you start buying it in the quantity my mom requires each year. Lol 4951

Mom's are scattered all over the backyard. I'm sure she is in a guidebook for Monarchs to find her house! She typically puts the pots out in sunny spots in the backyard and waters carefully to not disturb. Once the plants are filled with munching catepillars, she moves them to her covered patio so she can watch the festivities.

Be careful if you have a cocoon form on a plant that is being actively eaten by other catepillars. They don't tend to mind that their eating habits will put others in jeopardy. That is usually when she uses the butterfly habitat.

Once hatched, the butterflies will enjoy some juicy orange slices.
