Have y'all heard of the new grocery store set to open April 11?  The name is Aldi.  On FM 1960 in Atascocita behind the Panda Express.  It is a no frills low price store.  You have to pay 25 cents for a basket but get it returned if you return it to the rack.  You have to pay for grocery bags or you can bring your own.  You bag your own groceries and the store is smaller and has limited hours.  All this to keep prices low.  The also only sell their own store brands, i.e. no major brand labels are available except for special limited deals.  They claim you save as much as 50%.  They only have about  1,400 items available compared to 30,000 in an average grocery store.   This is a German company trying to break into the American marketplace.  I am skeptical about the concept but will try it to see if their claims are true.  After seeing many grocery chains exit the Houston market, we will have to see it this will be able to stay.  They are planning 30 total stores in the Houston area. 4951

(That's the name of their chips )from the looks of the store it looks like its almost ready to open. Anyone know a tentative date? 4951

Sounds a lot like the old Sak-N-Save on 59.  I'm sure there are people who will appreciate the no frills style, but for me, I enjoy the extra frills and foof at HEB including all of the variety and extra service that is available.  Yes, it costs more, but life is short and if you can enjoy some of the little extras in life, like a pleasant trip to the grocery store, then it's money well spent, IMHO.   I can't remember the name (either Food Town or Food City) that was on 1960 in Atascocita, but it was a no frills, bare basics grocery store and they went out of business.  If people want no frills basics, Super Wal-Mart and Super Target are just down the road with a grocery section. I wish them well, but they have some stiff competition.     4951

30 Locations are coming soon! They are making one in Conroe, one in Pearland I believe and one near Cinco Ranch! Lots of them are coming soon! I read an article on this a while back! I'm surprised that they don't accept credit cards. Cash Only!  4951

Here's the article. That says they do not accept Credit Cards/Checks. At the very bottom where it begins with In addition....Grocer ALDI host hiring event Wednesday in Conroe Posted: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 11:25 am Staff report ALDI, a discount grocer with a presence in 32 states, is holding a hiring seminar from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lone Star Convention Center, 9055 Airport Road. ALDI is entering the Houston market with more than 30 stores over the next two years, including one located in Conroe at the intersection of Longmire Road and North Loop 336. ALDI is looking to hire approximately 20 employees at the Conroe store as cashier and shift managers, company spokeswoman Awra Luqman said Tuesday. Those positions start at $11.50 per hour, and include a benefits package of major medical, dental and vision insurance, paid vacation, short and long term disability, retirement , 401K, company paid uniforms, and more for employees working at least 20 hours a week, according to an ALDI press release. The company will also conduct a job seminar from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Crown Plaza hotel, 12801 Northwest Freeway in Houston. The first ALDI store opened in 1961 in the German town of Mülheim where the self-service concept was developed and adopted, making ALDI the first hard discounter in the world. In 1976, ALDI opened its first U. S. store in southeastern Iowa. ALDI US is independently managed and operated, and all U. S. profits are reinvested in the United States. ALDI operates more than 1,200 stores in the U.S., including 37 in Texas, most of which are located in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. ALDI has been in the Dallas market since 2010. With this expanded footprint in Texas, ALDI expects to bring 400 jobs and an investment of over $100 million of capital expenditures to the Houston market. To lower food costs, ALDI relies on a simple, cost-effective approach to grocery shopping that fundamentally saves shoppers on their grocery bills at the checkout. In addition to volume buying, ALDI does not offer in-store banking, pharmacies, bagging clerks, check cashing or other non-essential grocery store services. Credit cards and checks are not accepted due to handling costs. Typical store hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.  4951
