We currently have tile in the kitchen but planning on a remodel sometime this year. Trying to decide between tile and hardwoods. I'm leaning towards new tile. Opinions? 4951

I hate tile because its cold and you can't drop anything without it shattering all over the place. If you go with wood make sure they seal it right for wet rooms. 4951

We have saltillo tile in the bed room and hall way, tile in the kitchen and utility and laminate in the family, living and dining rooms.I like the laminate a little better than the saltillo and if had a choice would replace the saltillo with laminate. We went with the laminate because it wears better than hard wood. But after seeing my daughters house (with two dogs) bamboo flooring and how well it wears, I would do that instead of laminate. Plus it looks really good. 4951

If you go with tile, get the radiant heat that goes under it.  You won't have cold feet and it saves on energy bills.  Best of all-it is not really that expensive or hard to install. 4951

similar to Terracotta?

@TexINS: OK, I'll go with that. Because Terracotta is such an easy color to pin down.
Almost every mecican/tex-mex place has that type of tile down. The problem with it is it is really thick and has to be laid on a mud bed. So molding and doors etc, have to be changed (changed meaning raised typically) so there is added cost above the cost of the tile itself. It does for some odd reason feel softer underfoot than ceramic tile, I can't explain it any other way. 4951

We just tore out all our carpet in the downstairs living areas and put in wood grain tile.  We love it.  No one can believe it is tile.  I don't have a problem with tile being cold.  It is always so hot in Houston it is actually enjoyable.  When we get home from taking our dogs on a walk the first place they go lay down is on the tile.  I have found that wood floors are just too much up keep.  When we take my dogs to my parent's home someone has to spend half the trip wiping up the water the dogs have spilt from their bowls.  Here is a link to build direct.  They send free samples.  We ended up getting our tile from Lowes.

You just can't beat tile for the kitchen. It's true the size trends have changed. But all the trends are toward larger tiles for flooring. Get some nice neutral color in the biggest size and you'll be fine. My kitchen had the 8" ugly white plain stuff. Had that removed and put in the 20" laid on a diagonal pattern. Very nice and it  adds dimension to the floor.I love wood. but the truth is it's not practical when you consider laminate wears like iron and looks good too. Wood in areas where there is water in not a good idea IMO. 4951
