Does anyone have any tips for buying a used car. Fiance's car stopped working and has been using mine and now is thinking about buying a used car, something somewhat cheap for now. Any tips in what to look for to find problems and or how to spot a good one. How can you tell if something is wrong with it? 4951

Also check the heat and ac. if the heat doesn't work that could mean a lot of different things from water pump to heater core to aa messed up motor. also make sure the fan changes direction from floor to defrost. 4951

Go to Walmart or Target and buy Consumer Reports car buying guide for $10. It gives reliability on all used cars for the past 10 years. They also give you tips on buying used cars.Yes, take it to a mechanic first, make sure you or they do a carfax check too. Stay with the reliables (Toyota, Honda) if going for older high mileage car. Lastly, if you can afford it, buy a Toyota Avalon. For some reason old people really like those cars, so if they are selling one (to trade for a newer model or an estate sell) they will be in good condition. 4951

I beg to differ @kingwooddiscg. I ran the title on a used car it it came up as a salvage title. I walked from the deal. 4951

@TexINS: ....then you are looking at junk........carfax only reports what has been noted.  Cars are repaired everyday outside of insurance claims.  Carfax is a used car sales tool.  Dealers buy most of the inventory at auction..... 4951

It was a private party seller. He bought salvage , fixed them up real nice and priced them at non-salvage price. You wouldn't know the difference unless you ran the report. Anyway, if you are about to buy a car why not spend $100 to make sure (car fax plus inspection) is in good shape? We do have alot of flood damaged cars in the inventory to. 4951

Carfax is a joke an tells you nothing......
@kingwooddiscgolf: My husband works for Carfax, and has been with the company for 15 years (basically since they started).
The Carfax report will have a lot of valuable information- number of owners, maintanance reports, any (reported) accidents, every region the car has been registered (i.e. - it will flag things like whether a car was registered in the NY area during Sandy, in Louisiana during Katrina etc.).

Most people will agree, the Carfax report is a very valuable tool in most cases. 4951
