With power, prestige and fame come an apparent inability to keep your pants zippered. 4951

@KellyG: More likely, he was married 37 years, and he wanted out about 27 of those ago. Because he's not happy for whatever reason, but b/c of all the entangling alliances, money, family issues, he stuck it out. THEN he fell in love and now he's been found out so he's screwed.OR He's a womanizing pig, screws anything that moves.

I'm calling BS on this.  Patraeus and Obammy don't see eye to eye and  I imagine this is just another step by bho to move one of his into this position. 4951

@salth2o: All he had to do was ask him to resign. Why the affair thing? nah, it's probably true. There are security clearance issues that might have been violated with the other woman..

Salth, everything is not a conspiracy.  Most likely someone or some organization like a news network found out about the affair and thus he felt it is better to resign than to take himself, his family, and the agency through the muck.  In intelligence circles affairs are considered especially serious because there is the danger of potential blackmail, particularly for someone as high in the food chain as the Director.It's unfortunate but I hope everything works out for him and his family. 4951

Salth, this is normal after a president wins a second term.  Historically, cabinet members routinely move on because is most cases their jobs are extremely stressful, they get little time to spend with friends and family, and most want to return to their home towns.  Not to mention the ton of money they will make in private industry after having served in the cabinet. As for the SEALS, each member understands when they become a part of the team that they are never to reveal operational capabilities.   This has nothing to do with the current occupant of the White House but everything to do with maintaining secrecy.     4951

@rocket:

If you think Hillary is resigning on her own then you are delusional! She is as power-hungry and egomaniacal as anybody in Washington. 4951

Burnsway, Good news.  That means a committee which has access to far more information than we do will look at the evidence and try to determine what happened.  Because Petraeus is no longer director does not mean he can't provide testimony regarding these events, it's not like the man is going to fall off the face of the earth.  In addition, his chief deputies knew as much about the situation as he did.  But bottom line is if he's required or subpoened to testify he will.  So his resignation will not prevent that.  Why is it so hard for you to believe he is resigning for the reasons he stated?  Is he a liar too? 4951

She might be power hungry.  If that's the case all the more reason for her to resign as Secretary.  You can't be bogged down traveling the globe and plan a campaign too - if that's what she decides to do.  For example, a run for president is years in the making.  If she wants to run say in 2016, resigning now is a good move. 4951

I have to say I agree with @Burnsway on this one. Way to convenient for him to just disappear. I mean didn't we have a former president have an affair and keep his job? 4951

The truth of this, we will never know. It's the CIA, for heaven's sake.
He definitely knows more than anybody will ever know about Bhangazi. The extra-marital affair is likely and with his clearance, it's a big issue, but blackmail against the Company is unlikely to ever succeed. If it were just te affair, they can easily shut the woman or any reporter up.
There is more to the story for sure. I guarantee you former heads of the CIA have had affairs before. 4951
