I've been offered a career in ROV.   It pays a lot less money but has a steady work schedule which still involves lots of travel.   It will be a very scary move. I've built a good reputation and earned respect as a diver. I'll be throwing that away and starting over.  I'm a very physically active person so moving into a chair will be a harsh change for me.   But in return, I might actually be able to plan a social life.   I still haven't made a final decision.  But there are very few people that dive into their 60s, so eventually I will have to give up diving anyway. (though that could be 20 years from now)  But as of now I can rarely plan an anything or take trips.  All of my socializing is on a whim and my entire life is spontaneous. So it might be worth the loss of what I've accomplished.   Even though the ROV is a technical field it's still very corporate.  As with any corporate work it involves politicking   ...I hate politicking.     I'm not much of a suck-up. 4951

@Longstocking:   probably so. yeah.  I was told that if I change then I should make supervisor within 3 years.  But they won't put that in writing. LOL  I had a few friends that did the same move.  They came back to diving.  They said it's not for people like us because,  "Well,  ......it sucks."  LOL      I think that means that it's not adventurous. Its the difference of watching a game on TV, or being in the game.  Most of the ROV personal that I've met are big video gamers.  ...I don't play video games.  I rock climb, mountain bike, kayak, hike, etc.  It might be a very difficult transition for me.      ...and they had BETTER have a damn gym on board! ! ! ! !

You can always dive.  Learn the new technology and add it to your knowledge base.  Maybe one day you will be searching for lost treasure. 4951

Maybe you should check out what other diver's did as they got older? You could always move to SPI and run diving tours. Your back story was very good and inspirational. I'm sure you will be successful in this new endevour.I have been in outside sales forever. I took a job where I moved indoors in cube city to do sales and hated it. I quite and took another outside sales gig. I just need to be outside.   4951

DD,

I know you've sort of done this already but make a list of 10 most important things in your life then decide which job helps you attain/keep most of those things.  Some of them may not be negotiable to you.  You may also consider looking at other jobs.  If you are going to make a change, make it to something you'll enjoy.  Don't settle for the ROV just because it was offered to you.  Sounds like that job will always be an option BECAUSE of your reputation and accomplishments so don't think that was a 'waste' and you are starting over.  Think of the time spent diving as a foundation - that experience got you to this point.

OK, what's ROV?  I get remotely operated underwater vehicle.  If that's it, I would think that job would be of high interest to you.   Sorry, I'm clueless.  But I do wish you the best of luck in your decision!

@SandyKnee:   Yes, that's exactly what it is. I believe I have a photo in front of one in my profile.
You have to keep in mind that I am going from being in the water, to holding a stick at a computer.   Very different.  The challenges are a far cry from being similar.  Have you ever watched the NASA channel?   Not the same as being an Astronaut! 4951
