No, but some people died using it because they were using tap water. 4951

Yes, it works!!  Not too much fun, but wonderful esp. if you have bad allergies.....BUT, over - use can also lend to sinus infections more frequently if you are prone to them.But, it is a savior esp. during and after a cold to help!!  (I don't actually use the netti pot, I use something similar.) 4951

You use warm tap water, but you need to add the saline solution to it... You also have to remember to breathe OUT of your mouth while doing it....so you don't drown yourself/choke on the solution.... 4951

i use one and it's awesome! i use room temp water with 1/2 a saline packet. if i use the whole saline packet...it dries me out too much. it's pretty gross to see the amount of gunk that comes out. i suggest having lots of tissue within reach while using it.

at first it feels like you're going to die...but once the water makes its way through your sinuses, it's fine. 4951

In fact, the two tragic neti pot deaths in Louisiana were caused from using impure water for nasal irrigation. This, alone, makes it worthwhile to stress neti pot safety.The two neti pot users who died, a 51-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, used neti pot water straight from the tap. I've done this myself when I was a neti pot newbie, not because I don't care about safety, but because I didn't know any better.I'm sure I'm not alone. Over the course of hundreds of years, it's likely that countless people have used less-than-ideal water for nasal irrigation. And yet, those countless people survived just fine.But unfortunately for the two people who died, their tap water contained something very, very bad -- a brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri. Although this amoeba is found around the world, in the United States, most infections have occurred from freshwater in Southern states.This makes sense, considering that this parasite is found in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs, as well as in the soil itself. It can also be found in the warm water discharge from industrial plants, in swimming pools that don't have enough chlorine, and even in hot water heaters where the temperature is less than approximately 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius).Naegleria fowleri is not found in the ocean, where the water is salty.In the last ten years, only about 30 people have died from this amoeba, and the vast majority of those did so after swimming in contaminated water.The recent neti pot deaths were extremely rare in several ways. The infection came from tap water, and it occurred not from swimming in contaminated water, but rather from doing nasal irrigation in the relative safety of one's home. 4951

Yeah, dont use tap water unless you have a death wish. Adding saline packets doesn't help. Manufacturer warning actually says only use distilled or filtered water. It specifically says, no tap water. 4951

@EJohn54: What's wrong with tap water?

@lola

it is safe to drink, but not flush your cavities with. It can contain bacteria that will kill you if they enter a sinus cavity. 4951

@mm4731:  you can buy the saline packets in the same area as the Netti Pots will be....Also, the netti pot should come with some saline packets with it...  Emoticon 4951

@EJohn54: So I guess we shouldn't shower and get the water in our nose or ears either?
I'm guessing this is slightly blown out of proportion.What would happen if you were out in the rain and sniffed in rain water? Instant death?What if you are boating and get splashed, in your mouth? Instant death? 4951

Are you snorting water in the shower? If so, you might be doing it wrong.

 Water entering your nose is different than water entering your sinus cavity.

Didn't you just link to a story about two people dying from this? How can you say it is blown out of proportion after that? 4951
