How old is your son? If he's still a little rough/rambunctious I would suggest an older (3+ yrs) mutt from the pound. If he's polite I love my boxer, he's full of life & hilarious. 4951

@OhHappyPets:

billy (the boxer) was a total nightmare for about 3 years. but he was adorable while doing it.

i'd also suggest a more mature dog. puppies are a LOT of work. plus, if you rescue a full grown dog, the rescuers will be able to tell you a lot about the dog's personality.

also...you need to figure out if you want or don't want a dog that needs to be taken to a groomer. i didn't want to have to do that, so both of mine are short hair, wash and go, dogs. saves me money!

i Emoticon mutts!! 4951

Golden retriever is a good choice. Be careful though with pounds. A lot of good dogs there but you may find one that may be mixed with something that could be an issue. We have a retriever mixed with a terrier and that dog can jump over any backyard fence. It caused some grief between my wife and I because she latched on to it immediately like a new car. Do your homework and you will be fine. 4951

Ya, my boxer basically ruined my life for about 3 years lol. I always forget about that...I would get a calm, even tempered dog. Goldens are great family dogs, but can be extremely clingy, so be prepared to trip over a dog every time you turn around. Terriers are fun, but can be very barky. DO NOT get a boston terrier...they are wild. The sweetest dogs overall that I deal with are long haired daschunds, they have the best temperament!  4951

Mutts are the best!  We had a golden mix and a black lab mix when my kids were growing up.  Both were rescue dogs from the side of the road, not a rescue group.  They were the best dogs for my rough and tough boys.  The golden played with my youngest, who was pretty rough, by wrestling with him, he used to push over my son and drag him around the living room, tail wagging and laughter.  I have a lot of pictures of the two of them going at it, definitely a boy and his best friend.  The lab was very docile, as the first year of her life before we found her was most likely very abused and mistreated, she was the cuddle bug, she just wanted to be loved and hugged.  She didn't bark, ever.  I heard her yelp once, but never bark.  We were thinking she might of had some basengi in her mix.I have a couple of mutts now, an Australian Shephard/lab mix and a German Shephard/lab mix.   We adopted the Aussie mix from in front of Petco, and the German mix we've had for about 1.5 years and we found her sick on the side of the road.  The two smartest dogs I've ever known, was the Golden and now the Aussie.  I swear the Golden could tell time and he was a trickster and a talker.  You could ask him how his day was and he would respond.  The Aussie, I'm pretty sure that dog understands conversations.  Good luck on your search.  As you can tell I'm a pro-rescue-a-mutt person. 4951

Having a golden I would have said that, until we got the Great Pyr.But he is to young for that large a dog. But Pyr's are great family dogs, and wonderful protectors, where goldens are not.There are a really a lot of facts to consider, like how much exercise the breed needs, border collies and like breeds are smaller, but require a lot of exercise.  4951

I would definitely get an adult dog from a rescue (preferably one that has been fostered) if you have little ones at home.  That way you have a better idea of  what the dog's temperament is and how it behaves in certain situations. 4951

I agree with a Golden Retreiver for sure.  They are great family dogs.

Newfoundlands are probably the sweetest, gentlest dogs for kids, but it's almost impossible to find one around here.  We had to have ours flown here from Tennessee.  They are also extremely clingy.  They are very well behaved indoors, and they will only want to stay indoors, and they do shed a LOT, but you will never find a sweeter dog. 4951

@ silly123...Iam allergic to animal dander so I had to select my 3 dogs from a list of  breeds that are non-shedding....I chose poodles , they come in 3 different sizes , do not shed & love being held & played with . I do have to take them to the groomers every 7 to 8 weeks to get their hair & nails cut & ears cleaned , but other than that they are an awsome breed of dogs & are great with kids . You will not find any "dog hair" in your house or on your furniture  from this breed . They are extremely smart dogs & are very easy to pottie train . Females are better than males , I have 2 males & one female , all were "fixed" at 6 months of age . We never wanted to use them for breeding  just pets.

There are lots of poodles up for adoption at the rescue , all ages & sizes  waiting for a loving home . Good luck  in finding your "perfect fur baby"..... 4951

I would suggest to go to the petsmart in humble on 59 on Saturday or Sunday between 1 and 4 pm. VAP (volunteers for animal protection) have adoption events there every weekend. You can talk to the volunteers and they can help you guiding what type of dog would suit your family. They have a no kill shelter in humble and also dogs in foster homes. We currently foster a puppy for them, but she already got a home and will leave us soon to settle with her new family. But there are many more dogs waiting for their chance to be adopted, including the sister of our foster, a 10 week old Labrador puppy if you want to go for a puppy. But as everyone else said before, they are a lot of work for the first few month. Good luck with your dog search! 4951
