Rail in this area of the country is just stupid. No wait, it is dumber than stupid. Population centers shift in the south shift unlike in larger northern cities where they are static. Also, in larger northern cities, population centers are highly dense (many high rise residences as opposed to large spread out subdivisions). Once a rail is laid, it isn't going anywhere. If the population shifts, then you have a rail that does not serve anyone. Busses are mulch more efficient, much more flexible, and billions less expensive. The original rail in Houston that basically goes from nowhere to nowhere and pretty much serves no one, cost 800 million dollars!!!!!!

@SeeVee:

You can't honestly believe that paragraph of bs you just typed.

I agree....that is total bs.  Problem is you dont build inner city rail first.  You need rail from the Woodlands, Clear Lake, SugarLand, Kingwood.  Should have put rail in when you built those silly contra flow lanes and or improved the freeways.  I tell you whats even dumber, they had the tracks not being used from Houston to the Katy area along I10 and tore them out.  That was your test train Houston.

They have one in Austin area as well.

It will work in Houston area but would be rather expensive. I wouldn't go downtown more often, but I would use it when I did go.

light rail installed at grade has not be a success in downtown....if the railway experiences more than a few inches of rain...the trains stop.  and then, there is the fact that they go nowhere........

They'll need experts to work on this thing and NOT government employees.  They should call the people at DisneyWorld to plan and design any passenger rail system.  They did it right.

This pilot monorail line, organized by Monorail Inc., made its debut (albeit two hours late because of a mechanical holdup) on Feb. 18, 1956, at Arrowhead Park near Old Spanish Trail and Main.
