tara, it only gets worse!

my only recommendation for you is to not pick stuff that is gender specific for the big things (car seat, play pen, high chair, bouncy chair, swing).

my friend got all of those things above in cute pink patterns, but was screwed when she had a boy for the next child.  she had to go purchase just about everything.

save the girly stuff for her room and clothes

@ taramay...my grand-daughter is head of the "Carseat Safety Board" in Ohio , she can tell you what one is the  best & what to look for when buying one. She has all kinds of information on carseats & she also gives siminars on car-seat safety ...would you like her e-mail address ?

For a newborn until they are one, the travel systems are a MUST HAVE.  Several companies make them, but in my opinion the best bang for the buck is the Graco Travel System.  They come in a lot of different patterns and consist of the infant carseat, base, and stroller.  I got one 4 years ago in black, red, and white, so it was great for my son, and then my daughter 3 years later.  Once they get too old/big for the carseat, the stroller can be used on it's own without inserting the car seat into it.
So, for the past 4 years, it has been used a lot and has held up really really well.  I think they range from about $150-$250 for the complete set-up, and you can buy extra bases for multiple cars.  The base is the trickier part to install, and the seat itself just clicks in.

This is the exact one that I got.  It was masculine enough for a boy, but not so much that it also worked for my little girl.

We did the same as littlegoo. Travel system, ours was by Graco as well. You will most definitely need multiple bases if you have more than one car too but those are fairly inexpensive. We also put a head supporter in the car seat when she was a newborn too.

@aggiebutterfly:  as logical as that is...i just can't help it! and...for kids in the future, there's a 50% chance i'll be able to reuse it!

I picked a Graco travel system. I just pick one from my husbands travel points catalog that he gets. Marriott or continental, I forget wich. There were only a few choices so it made it easy to decide. Free car seat & stroller couldnt pass that up.
Otherwise desicions are a b@tch when pregnant. I am really struggling with descions right now. It's really frustrating. I actually had an anxiety attack last night over fabric for the nursery curtains. I will be so glad when my hormones go back to normal.

these are tough decisions! there's too much to choose from.

@taramay:

Trust me Tara, you want thick padding, 5 point straps. Some day I will post my totaled minivan pics... kids were all very safe in all seats. They all had the same model and type... the wreck was bad, I took out two other cars in the process.

So in a few months you will be looking for another top of the line seat...

I did one seat per kid... that last for as long as the kid needs it.

as for the stroller, I purchased teh 10 dollar strollers... found them the easiest to maneuver around clothes racks in the store.

Oh., yes, we did have the high dollar stuff, it just got too bulky, and our thinking then moved for simplicity and speed.
