My husband and I go back and forth on this all the time, he feels we have to many and I feel as long as they are well taken care of and given lots of love and attention it's hard to say what too many is. We currently have 4 kitty cats and one small dog 4951

Some people will say any pet is too many.....It depends on the person/family.  I have 4 dogs of my own, and know that is my limit for my house and yard size(yes, it is probably too many) but I love all of them!  Emoticon  I def. don't think you have too many pets!    OH, I actually have a cat too.....he adopted me and my house, but he lives outside.....   Emoticon 4951

I believe a person should be allowed as many as they want as long as the place stays clean and sanitary and that they can feed and give basic vet needs to them. When it comes to cats, 1 is too many if your not gonna keep it on your own property 24/7 With dogs 1 is too many if your gonna let them roam or bark all night.. 4951

To me, it depends on the size of the property and # kids in the home. When we had a flat acre 2 dogs 1 cat was perfect . When we moved to a new house with smaller lot , two dogs were too much. The yard got torn up and we had to walk them to get their excercise (tough to walk two very large Dobie's atthe same time). Now we have a smaller dog and cat. At times just wish it was the cat. 4951

I have two cats and two dogs. That is my limit. When the cats pass away I don't want any more. I will probably always have two dogs. 4951

Well I love my kitties so they aren't going anywhere :-) the dog we never planned on just found her abandoned and my two boys fell in love with her, so she became a family member. Before we found her we were discussing getting a dog...my husband works night shifts ALOT and I get paranoid in our house, our bedroom is way in the back and you can't hear anything happening up front and I wanted to get a dog who would bark or alert me if they heard something strange. Then we found Ellie and she's a doll but she doesn't bark at anything, she never even gets up to go to the door if the doorbell rings lol so as sweet as she is and a great companion she's not helpful on my being home alone paranoia lol 4951

however many a person can take care of  & afford to feed & vet when needed . However ...I do not think a person should keep their pets outside where they bother the neighbors ( cat or dog)  a pet should be part of your family & be allowed inside with the family , outside to pottie & walk  with the owner.
My grand-daughter has 2 dogs & 5 kids , way too many for the size house she lives . But it's her house & her problem ....no one elses business.... 4951

@perryamandam: This may seem strange, but you need a great Pyrenees.
I know, they are big.But they are great guard dogs, with a healthy bark.Plus they need moderate exercise, and are happy sitting around the home as they are walking or playing. They are great with the family pack.My wife is way more comfortable now we have one.At night she sleeps center of the house to guard all the bedrooms and hear the doors.Yes sometimes she does wake us at night with a bark or 3 or 4. But not too often. 4951

Personal decision, but I agree keeping clean, being able to afford their care and being able to give them some time and love is a good criteria. Cats are very independent in a lot of ways...you can leave them alone and they self care, dogs not so much...Be moderate. I will always want more than I have but  I talk myself out of it on a daily basis. 4951

@TheTruthHurts: I know right. I want to save all those dogs out there.
But then reality sets in. 4951
