You can go to city park I think they have peddle boats or at least they have some really cool huge oak trees to take pictures in.  Also in city park there is  a little story land and train.  http://neworleanscitypark.com/carousel_gar

They have an aquarium near the riverwalk.

That website has a lot of info on it.  I haven't seen the trees that I like to take pics on.  The big branches grow into the ground and back up again.  There is more than I remember there.  But living somewhere you tend to not take advantage of all that is offered.

City Park is excellent for photos

The Zoo and Aquarium are both top notch.

Eat at Mother's.  The food is from Heaven.

Take one of those horse drawn carriages, and get a comfy tour of some really cool things in the French Quarter.  (about the only way you aren't bothered by the beggars).

@TXtransplant:
check out Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras world
http://www.mardigrasworld.com/
also check out the WWII museum
http://www.nationalww2museum.org/
Both are close to downtown and are within walking distance of each other. Good Luck!

You can take a round trip ride from downtown to the Audobon Zoo via the St. Charles street cars. Then take the riverboat back to the Riverwalk or Jax.  Nawlins is not the most kid friendly city, but if only there a day the zoo and aquarium should do the trick.

also a short drive from downtown New Orleans is the Chalmette Battlefield ( good history lesson opportunity for the kids)....I've been there countless times, as it is where I grew up.
