When arguing in defense of a pitbull what is the misconception you most have to deal with? For me it's that pits are unpredictable. ANY dog or breed of dog can be unpredictable. You just have to be aware of general behavior patterns of certain breeds.

I'm posting this because my brother-in-law and I were discussing the pros and cons of "big breeds" and my beloved pits were brought up first. Just interested in others' experience with defending these delightful dogs.

EDIT: My brother-in-law is the "unbeliever" Emoticon 4951

Mine has always been that they always bring up a THIRTY YEAR OLD study through dogbitelaw.com to prove  they are the most aggressive but yet dog bite law NEVER comments on his page anywhere that CDC has since pulled the study as not valid because they never got the actual breed of the dogs and that most the breeds were mixes and CDC has gone on record as saying breed banns dont work and that it is virtually impossible to say if one breed is more aggressive than another.many times people come back and say no this study was done in 2004 2005 2006...etc but when you read the notes which the new study came from is it was pulled from the same damn study that is 30 years old. The only thing new about the new studies is they are written on new paper with new ink...LOL 4951

Getting people to understand the Lock Jaw and Bite Pressure crap is a myth is a biggy too...there has only been ONE ONLY ONE study done through Dr Barr through National geographic...here are his findings.http://dogfacts.wordpress.com/2008/02/03/national-geographics-dr-brady-barrs-bite-pressure-tests/ 4951

That people think dog aggression = human aggression.

When I was fostering a pit pup this woman walked up to me and asked "what's it like living with those dogs? How do you trust them?"

People are downright terrified and fearful of this breed, it's alarming how much adversity you face if you own one. 4951

@xjamiex:

My Grandma was the same way when we adopted Puffy. Even though she'd never met Puffy, she had heard all the hoopla about how aggressive Rottweilers Can be, and apparently Puffy being a Rottie/Chow mix made it "worse". Puffy has never tried to bite any human...she just tries to act scary. Emoticon So I have first hand (first paw?) experience with that attitude.

From the study I posted, the APBT (which DID appear to be biting that sleeve for all it was
worth, a good “full-mouth” bite)managed only 127 p.s.i, just seven
pounds more than the HUMAN tested! Thats a far cry form the 10,000 p.s.i that haters want you to believe...LOL 4951

@JJ: As long as there are people out there believing that this breed is more aggressive than others it has not been brought up enough!

All you have to do is look at the facts.  More often than any other breed you hear about these dogs mauling someone to death.

The fact people come out with the defense they are harmless is mind boggling. In my own experience of taking soemone to the emergency room with a dog bite from a pit bull that was supposedly "sweet and harmless" the doctor said if he had a dollar for every dog bite he encountered from a supposedly sweet and harmless pit, he could retire.

I'm not saying to ban the breed, I'm just saying to be realistic around these animals even if its a pit, rottweiler, golden retreiever, poodle, whatever. Learn from the facts. 4951

Honestly i think what the defenders are unable to defend is the ferocityy of the attacks. yes, we all know other breeds bite MORE, but the damage factor has to fit in there as well. 4951

@PedroDePacas: I don't trust them.  Not with my life or my kids life.  When you have had one growl and rush at you in your own yard, you think twice.
