  "...and I'm a Mormon."

  What is with all the advertising?
  Are they bragging?
  Do they want donations?
  It's on YouTube all the time.
   I just don't get it.        ? ? ?
 Maybe I'm a moron. ? ? ?     (that's probably a given - based on perception)        Maybe they are proud because they have one more letter.

  I wonder how much money they are wasting for this advertising.   ...not sure I would be bragging.

Have you seen the proud to be a muslim billboards around town as well? Everyone seems to be trying so hard to be something rather than just do something. Tired of everyone and their "look at me. I'm different or I think I'm special." Man, just be stand up Americans.

It's just a way to let people know that Mormons aren't these scary people.  They are normal people, who live normal lives.  There are quite a few misconceptions out there about Mormons (who prefer to be called members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints vs. Mormons).  There are all sorts of rumors flying around with Mitt Romney running for president and all.

I don't think anyone thinks Mormons are scary. Black pants, white shirt, tie, bike helmet really don't strike the fear in many.
Maybe this can be clarified. Do Mormons believe Satan and Jesus are brothers?

@TexINS
I found this regarding Satan & Jesus being brothers.

The Mormon teaching that Jesus and Satan are brothers is based on their concept of God being the Father of all pre-existent spirits. Since Jesus is the son of the Father and all other spirits, including Satan, are sons and daughters of the Father then all are brothers and sisters.
@taramay
 The term Mormon is a slang word.  Mormons don't mind being called Mormons, but they prefer to be called Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Mormons
   Even if shortened to MCJCLDS it's just to long.  Maybe Mc Jcld  (pronounced:  Mic Jisled) ??

  I would prefer to be called an Aquanaut of the Deep Sea Depths of the Abyss.
but I will be called Diver.   ...it' just a reality.

   So they advertise for acceptance?    ...self confidence?

  The average person wouldn't do that.  Am I the only one that sees the irony in this?

i mean...if the term mormom is slang, wouldn't the term catholic be slang also?

Why does anyone SPAM youtube?  Isn't it to let people know about them or their product?  This isn't the first time that Mormons have advertised or had commercials on t.v.

I found this about the advertising:
The ads evolved solely from public reaction to past church campaigns, said Scott Swofford, director of media for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Swofford provided answers to recent questions from the Deseret News.
Deseret News: These ads have a very basic message: “This is my life, this is who I am, and I am a Mormon.” What message are you trying to help people understand with that kind of message?
Swofford: Well, you can go on and on all day long trying to define yourself in the minds of the public, or you can, in fact, connect them to members of the church. When you do that you see the incredible diversity, the various walks of life that Latter-day Saints are involved in, and they see that Mormon thinking can be as diverse as it needs to be to live their life. Yet surprisingly, if you read the 3,000 mormon.org profiles, you will find those people are very unified in the understanding of what they believe. It is shocking. I expected responses to be all over the place, and they are not. People in their own words are articulating their beliefs better than perhaps we could.

Because the proper name of the Church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We call ourselves Latter-Day Saints (LDS for short), meaning that we are followers of Christ.

We don't get offended at being called Mormon, but that title erroneously implies that we follow Mormon. We prefer LDS because it defines who we are.
 No one is going to correct you taramay when you call them Mormons.  The leaders of our church have asked us to identify ourselves as LDS not Mormons.  Either way is fine.  There is a lot of negative conotations about the word Mormon and some people don't realize that LDS and Mormon are the same.

  It's their money and they can waste it however they wish to.  But it's pretty silly if you ask me.  Maybe if they were to spend more time with people outside of their group then it would help their cause.  But they tend to stick together in a small secluded group.

   People don't want to be stereotyped but they stereotype themselves.  It's human nature to wish to be a part of something greater than themselves.  They need a purpose in life and by classifying themself it gives them direction and justification.   "I am a football player."   "I am a lawyer."   "I am a triathlete"   "I am a Christian."
  If someone needs this classification for themself then I'll back them on it.  But the reality if it giving them purpose just isn't true.  It holds you back.  You are limiting yourself.   The only one that seems logical to me is the professional aspect of it.  In which case it gives other people direction to you for your expertise.

  I'm just saying its pretty silly and a huge waste of money that could be put to something much more purposeful and spent more responsibly.

  So if they want to be classified, well being someone that wastes money on something so irrelevant is not someone I want to be classified as.  Of course, everyone is different and has different motives.  So, I hope they get the response they are hoping for.

@maven:
  Ha ha.  That kind of reminds me of when they tried to change the name of prunes to Dried Plums.
  I guess if it works, then how could it possibly be justifiably ridiculed. ...it works.

But they tend to stick together in a small secluded group.

@DiverDude:

Actually that is quite false. They are very involved in the community and are always willing to help anyone...Not just those of their faith. They are no different than any other religious organization...only difference is, you have stereotyped them. They have no problems associating with any person, however, there is a moral code that is taught and maybe, just maybe, your life is unacceptable in that - therefore you are the one secluded, because of the life that you live & they do not want to associate with that. Although, I do not see that simply as a Mormon thing, I see that as, well heck, there are people I choose not to associate with because I do not condone their attitude, behavior...whatever you may want to classify it. Even still, it is taught to be forgiving and accepting of your neighbors... so, sorry you FEEL that way, but, all in all, it is a false statement.

And what is it to you anyway, if someone is proud to say "and I am Mormon"? I mean, you don't have a problem if someone says and FIGHTS to say "and I am Christian". I bet you, that if this same thread was started but substitue "and I am Christian" - you would have sorts of people jumping down your throat about it - or more than likely, you would be appalled and upset that someone was having a problem with THAT.
They have a certain "moral code" they teach and are suppose to live by (CTR is one), which there is NOTHING wrong with that...
And therefore, they say "and I am Mormon" I live by this moral code and I move among you the same as your neighbor...proudly.

True!
And the younger generations, or not solid followers, do NOT know or understand that the leaders have asked & prefer for one to say LDS vs. Mormon. - so if you ask "one" it is not surprising that they answered "they did not know what you were talking about".
And yes, a reason for it is to remove theirselves from the negative stigma that "Mormon" tends to automactically bring - like plural marriage - which is not taught or tolerated.

@Maggie&Myla:
  My sister and her family are mormon.  They do tend to stick to their church friends.  In fact, everyone of their friends that I have met is mormon.   I have never heard them refer to themself as LDS.
  They stick to their church group friends because they spend so much time at the church.  So that is who they know.  They also don't feel the pier pressure to drink and party or even drink caffeine when they stick to their church friends.
  I never said anything about their choice to be Mormon (LDS).   I said it's silly to waste money advertising this.  ...and it is.  It is silly for anybody to waste money on this.
  In the end, they would still prefer to just hang out with the friends they have.  That's what makes it silly.

  It's not a judgement.  It's just the way they are.   If I were them, I'd do the same thing.  Stay with your social click.   But in the end, it's that social click that sterotypes them.   ...it's not a bad thing.

   Again,  I never said I had a problem with it.  Do what you want.  In fact, I specifically stated that I hope they accomplish what they want.  But it's still silly.
