Its my 16 week and I see the specialist that is going to offer the amnio. I keep going back and forth about whether to have it or not.

Anybody here had one when they were prego? 4951

I opted not to have it.  They can detect so many things via ultrasound today that we decided it wasn't worth the risk of miscarriage.  We wouldn't have changed our minds of continuing with the pregnancy regardless of what they would or could find anyways so it was really a no-brainer for us.  Besides, have you seen the needle they use to do it?  NO THANK YOU!!! 4951

@n+t I had one with my first. My husband passed out. Lol. I was torn about it too but opted to have it because during my ultrasound they thought my son would have downs syndrome. I'd rather know and be prepared. It's all up to u tho 4951

I decided not to have it. The risk from the Amnio were higher than the risk that I would have a downs syndrome baby.
Everything looked good on the ultrasound and all my other tests have come back normal.

good for you , I think the doctors & hospitals do way too many test already . Unless the baby is in danger from something seen on the ultra sound then I do not believe any more test should be done. 4951

Being an Ob/GYN nurse for over 15 years I feel the need to respond to that last comment. We are required by law to offer tests such as amniocentesis, nuchal translucency (screening test for Down's) and AFP test which is a screening test for both Down's syndrome and disorders of the brain and spinal cord. It is completely the patient's choice as to whether or not they want to have the test done. The one time we would fail to offer one of these tests would be the one time something would go wrong and of course, the doctor and staff would be held accountable only because it wasn't offered, even if the patient was not planning on terminating the pregnancy due to a positive result. The Providers I work for only order tests to be thorough cause most people these days look for someone to blame when they don't get the outcome they expect. . 4951

I had the nuchal test done and some basic screening. The AFP test wasn't offered. 4951

I signed opt out waivers on both my kids. And if I had anymore, even at my age and high risk, I would still opt out. 4951

For my last baby, I was 35, so they considered me to be "of advanced maternal age" (whatever!) and offered it to me.  I didn't want it, I would not choose to terminate anyway, so I didn't see the point of it.  I didn't do it with my first (I was 32) either.  I am not deeply religious, but I felt that whatever God's plan was, I was going to go with it. 4951

@Littlegoo: DAMN thats old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...NOT!!!!! I was 37 with my last.....LOL....Im 44 now and still would have another if it happened! I dont know where society got this idea that if your over 30 you should be done.... :-/  It really just depends on ones health and finances, other than that I see no reason a woman in her 40's should feel she is DONE with babies just because society thinks the 40's is old.....HA!!

@N+T: Thats just fantastic, its up to the woman, but I believe that if the good Lord wanted us to stop at 30 then we would have menopause then....LOL  I laugh though because I started getting gray hair at 17...yes SEVENTEEN (its hereditary )so when Dawn was born and I would go a lil bit without dyeing my hair and my 13 year old was with us I had woman actually looking at my teens boobs to try and figure out if she was the mom....I have had people whisper and even ask....LOL When my teen was with us many times I was called grandma by others...horrified my poor teen  as she is very conservative at times....LOLOnly reason I dont have more than 2 kids is because it didn't happen...took me 13 years of trying between the two...:-/

Yeah, I definitely don't think it's old either, but they still considered me to be of "advanced maternal age" as they put it.  If you are able to have a healthy pregnancy and have a healthy baby and take care of it, you are never too old.  Most people I know are having their babies in their 30's and 40's. 4951

@Littlegoo: I will admit I do get very sad at times that I probably wont get to enjoy grand-babies from my now 7 yr old like I will the teens (she is 19)kids...that does make me a little sad...:-( I mean I will hopefully still be around just not in the health to spoil them rotten....LOL
