A Guide to Keeping Your Dog Cool This Summer
1) Trim hair short on long-haired dogs. Because dogs are unable to perspire like we are, their internal temperature can build up rapidly, and dogs with excessive amounts of hair are at a much higher risk of overheating. While they do have sweat glands on their feet and can pant to release heat, they also cool down through a convection process that cools their skin. If they cannot access air cooler than their internal temperature, that protective convection cooling will fail. Regardless of “style,” plan to keep your dog’s hair trimmed close for the entirety of the summer. No look or grooming cost is worth causing your pet to suffer needlessly.
A heat stroke will cause cells in your dog’s body to break down. This can lead to nerve damage, internal organ damage, seizures, cardiac arrest, comas and even death. Don’t take any risks, prevent the worst by being as safe as possible with all the preventative measures mentioned.

I have my older golden cut down in the summer... Not for looks she is just getting old and she feels so much better and is more active after I have her cut down... Now with Mufassa, he is just too pretty I can't bear to do it.. he is young and can live with it .

Roh RohhThe first link if you really really read it, basically agrees the other post. They just say don't shave, yet in the next sentence say air circulation next to the skin is a good thing, and what does shaving do for them, make air available to the skin.
See, I said read what they say, read between the lines. Shaving is bad, but not having that much hair is good, just read it.
