Does making your home a homestead really help lower your taxes? If so roughly about how much? Just a few dollars? I just purchased a home and is new to all of this. I found out I can get a tax exemption for being disabled? Can you all educated me on how I can lower my taxes? We will willing to make our home a homestead and I am disabled. 4951

Homestead exemptions remove part of your home's value from taxation, so yes you want to file that. 4951

I don't know about a disabled exemption but homestead gives you 20% off. There is a simple form you can get online at hcad 4951

If your home is your homestead then why wouldn't you put the homestead exemption on it? It save around 20%. Not sure about the disability... 4951

@Momof2boyz: Don't worry about it, he does it all the time.  And nobody wants to hear it the first time.
