I know we have a lot of transplants here.  Does anyone know if there is a train that goes from here to Mass, Albany or Conn.  I tried looking up Amtrak but I was not finding it.  TIA 4951

I haven't looked in years, but there used to be Amtrak that would take you to the east coast, I just can't remember if it was Florida or George, then switch to go north to new England.
But it was typically about the same or even cheaper to fly. 4951

@FoFa: Thanks.  My DH is a pretty large guy so he thinks he will be more comfortable on a train than a plane.  He just found his dad after 41 years and he is really sick so we are trying to see if we can get him up to see him in January.  Checking all our options to see what's the cheapest at this point.  The drive is 26 hours and he can't get that much time in a row off work and we are figuring that would be about $400 in gas - he drives a pick up.Not to get in everyones business but is there anyone that is on the larger size that flies.  Is there an option for a bigger seat or anything?  TIA

@dotti573:

First Class. Maybe catch a good deal off hours.
Sometimes the economy seats are cheap enough you can buy two together. Doesn't help with legroom but good for side to side. 4951

You can buy two seats and ask for a seat belt extender. What airline are you flying? I would call them and ask. I am sure they deal with this all the time. 4951

United recently had $119RT to Boston. Think it is closer to $200 now but still a good deal. Look all dates and times. 4951

Only bad thing is DH is off the 2nd to the 11th of Jan.  The only time he could get off in a row.  He also goes to school online and that's the down time for him and his dad has no internet so he would have to find some place to do his schoolwork if it was any other time.  This is not as easy as one would think.  He is required to work a mandatory extra shift every 2 weeks but they never approve time off.  He has almost 200 hours of PTO time that can only be used if approved.  Not as sick pay.  Ugghh!!!! 4951

No- not directly- it would be quicker to drive or cheaper and also quicker to fly. You'd have to take the Cardinal to Atlanta(?) and then the one that goes from FL to NY. Mass transit sucks here in the US. We considered taking the train for fun to Cali- it was going to take forever 4951

When I looked a few years ago it did something stupid like went from Houston to Austin then to Newark. It took 24 hrs. I know it's not the cost but it was as much a plane ticket. I'll see if I can find it again. 4951

@thegoodwife: Thank you.  His dad lives in a small town called North Adams.  Its about 20 minutes from Pittfield, MA, 25 minutes from Albany and an hour and a half from Branfield Conn.  I just want to get him up there in January since he hasn't seen him since he was 5.  They both want to see each other and I don't want him to ever have the what if's if he doesn't get there.  I appreciate all the help and input.  We don't travel much as you can tell.

@ET: NOOOOOOO it's dead of winter then.... you don't like that weather, remember? Really Boston is a lot colder than here & gets more snow than we do.

@thegoodwife: He thought about driving but his dad's friends said even with the pick up, he is not used to driving in it - (he is a California boy) they would rather him not drive.
