Good morning all. Hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Quick question for all you dog owners, what food do you feed your fur baby?
Currently we feed him (shih tzu) instinct with the raw kibbles, but lately he has been itching a lot and has started licking his paws.
Not sure if it could be an allergy to the food or what. We haven't made any changes to his diet and yearly checkup isn't for another 2 months.
Thank you. 4951

My fur baby was itchy and I switched to grain free food.  It pretty much stopped.  She ate Fromm.  There are various flavors and places you can get it (even Costco)  Pampered Paws (next to Jason's Deli) gives (or they use to) small samples bags for you to try various foods so you do not have to purchase a larger bag.  Pet Ranch will take food back if they won't eat it.   4951

Don't believe all the hype.This time of year, there is a lot of fall pollen in the grass and on surfaces, this causes contact dermatitis, which gets on a pets fur, then the skin, and their paws.Usually it is not the food causing this itching, but a reaction to the pollen.Check with your vet. to be sure.Grains in dog foodIn fact, some grain free dog foods contain carbohydrate levels similar to or even higher than foods containing grains. In many grain free dog foods, ingredients such as potatoes replace the grains in the dog food and often these ingredients have more carbohydrates than the common grains used in dog food.You most likely are best served by keep feeding the regular food (instead of chancing a stomach disorder also), if it has served you well in the past.

@goldengirlKirkland is a Costco brand.It would be worth the membership. A 40lb bag of the one I buy for mature dogs costs around $30. 4951

@sh56:

We tried the love4u or something like that from there and was grain/wheat free. It was ok..better than most but not good enough for our dog and itchies. Its a good staple in a pinch but you just say the word grain or flea and this dog flares up.....😱

Taste of the wild was only a buck or 2 cheaper than pamper paws and pamper paws has buy so many get 1 free.

I gotta find a cheaper food that works because my 2 are costing me about 60 to 80 a month when on taste of the wild.

I dont think it cost me that much the way us humans eat on sales.... Emoticon

read the lists of ingredients. kirkland is a high quality dogfood. many of the dogfoods list ingredients such as chicken byproducts which is pretty much anything that comes from a chicken including things like heads,  feet and feathers.  i noticed over the years that food with chicken byproducts leads to a lot more licking and chewing their feet and scratching. the lamb and rice kirkland is a very high quality food.  4951

I order my food from chewy.com and get free shipping right to my door ( have to spend $45 or more).  You can order any brand of food; all sizes.  Excellent customer services.  Great savings for premium foods Emoticon 4951

A lot of time it is the protein they are allergic to; for instance, chicken, turkey and beef frequently cause allergic reactions. Oddly enjoy, duck is okay for dogs that cannot handle chicken and turkey.

This being fall, and people trying to prep their lawns for winter, is it possible your dog is itching from some of the lawn chemicals? 4951

Check out Kirklands food and www.dogfoodadvisor.com.  They have a lower rating.  Be sure and read the reviews. 4951
