I don't think he realized how close to the surface people carry their racism. That whole, "Me, I'm not racist, I don't know any racist people" denial thing.  All they needed was an excuse and a leader. How far we as a nation haven't come. 4951

I wonder if there is any increase in number of incidents at all since trump won. Undoubtedly it is getting more coverage since it's the news de jour, but a comparison of stats with previous years would be interesting...my money is on no significant difference, but will have to wait to see.

Last I saw was some law group saying 200 reported incidents since trump won, which is a lot for 1 week...unless you factor it into a population of over 300million, then it doesn't sound like much, to me atleast.

@JherronSome law group" is the Southern Poverty Law Center.  It is used by the DOJ and FBI to compile data on the incidence of hate crimes in the United States.  Before anyone says to consider that the democrats run those I will advance that they have carried out that task for far longer than the Obama Administration.Lest there is any doubt about the vile that is sometimes is around us I call attention to a post earlier today on this very site.  A picture of an unattractive gorilla was posted saying that is what the poster came up when he Googled 1st lady.  If that person were to post that outside this bubble there would e consequences, not thanks.Until those in the bubble recognize that vile evil exists we will not be one as a nation despite all the verses, prayers and good wishes posted here.  Listen to Mr. Trump, STOP IT.  He did not say you stop doing it, he said STOP IT 4951

@mulmye: I know about the SPLC, but for some reason my memory was making it to be a smaller group, but thats the one.  Guess i need sleep. Anyways, on to the meat of the post...something I dont really think can be done. How do you change a person's heart? Personally, I think it can only be done through experience. Discussion wont do it because its too easy to rationalize your beliefs and actions because you're not actually confronted with the consequences if you're not face to face. Legislation wont do anything but make them hold to them more tightly. Churches could through outreach and mission and inter-church fellowship,  but more often than not they self segregate (again, just another insulating bubble).  Apart from someone getting out of their bubble, into the black neighborhoods south of here on east mt houston or poor neighborhoods anywhere (they're all over the place) and into their homes so they can see that they're just people...i dont think theres a way. Just have to let them die out over time, i guess.

The SPLC is a group of fascist liberals. 0 credibility in the legal profession. On the flip side, where in the op's article do the protesters against Trump's being elected hatred fit in. Biased reporting only. What this country is tired of. So easy to look up facts now, or hear the other side to continue this nonsense. 4951

One group of people marching around being buttheads is of course going to incite another group of people to be even bigger buttheads. Everybody needs to get a grip and move on.

The Obama years have actually been very good for me - though I was a concerned with the lack of enforcement on immigration. I was not a Trump fan based on the campaign and past history but was really done with the Clintons and all their baggage. The other options were a joke. I really blame the Dems for not putting up a better candidate - sorry, so get to work on next time. You're wasting time crying over spilt milk now.

DNC is looking for a new leader. Michael Moore, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are endorsing Keith Ellison. He's congressman from Minnesota. He's also a Muslim. Not the way I would think they'd go. This should be interesting if he's chosen. 4951

first of all the splc is a viable and respected organization. there has been a spike in the incidents of racial and ethnic bullying , some accompanied by remarks referring to being whites back in power, etc. to deny that is simply foolishness and the ******** about playing the race card IS playing a race card. it doesnt help to treat the situation with a blind eye and a condescending attitude. things will get better but it will take time...and remember 'humorous stuff' about race generally IS racist, not that some is not funny but that humor is also used to demean the intended butt of the joke 4951

The people I know that voted for Trump are good people that were not in support of many of his views and comments. They were like a lot of voters. They weighed out their options and voted for who they thought was the least negative candidate in their estimation. That is a sad commentary on both candidates we had to choose from. But the prevailing attitude that people that voted for Trump are by a large majority racists and bigots is wrong. Just like the assumption that most Clinton supporters are abortion lovin' uneducated welfare mamas looking for handouts. Like someone else pointed out earlier on this thread, I also saw the picture posted of the big gorilla that was comparing it with the current first lady. Its less than subtle racial inference was not lost on me or I suspect on many others. I was offended and maybe I should have posted that but I guess I've adopted an attitude "why bother" since those kinds of memes and pictures have become so common since the past administration. But to deny there has been a racial overtone in much of the social media discussions regarding our president and his family would be sticking our head in the sand. That has crossed over to other parts of society from all sides. I will admit that I am personally sensitive to those kind of posts. I have two lovely immigrant daughter-in-laws who I love as if I gave birth to them, lol. Both are US citizens with advanced college degrees. One is Latino and one is Caribbean. Both are beautiful, gracious, and intelligent. My own lovely mother was a European immigrant. So, right or wrong, it is personal to me. I have seen first hand the face of bigotry when out with my son and his mocha skinned wife. But it is rare. We live in a diverse urban area where people have been exposed to same sex couples, different races, many faiths and cultures.  The sight of a same gender couple or mixed couple  barely raises an eyebrow.  Admittedly our  beautiful grandbaby gets many looks when his grandfather and I take him out, which is often. Maybe some people are just being patronizing when they go out of their way to tell us how adorable he is. But I don't think so. EmoticonMy son was devastated at the outcome of the election. He has great fears for his son growing up in a world where he will have to overcome preconceived assumptions and attitudes based on his heritage and skin tone. But to my pride, his way of dealing with it is to become more involved and productive in his community instead of being bitter. The day after the election he signed up to deliver food to the elderly. He and his wife then became involved in a project to deliver books to inner city children. They are signing us all up to be part of a layette program for new mothers in LBJ hospital to give a positive start to new mothers, many who are young first time moms who have been abandoned by the baby's father and their own families.I apologize for the length of this post.  I would like us to challenge each other to find productive ways to channel our frustrations with the wrongs in our country and to seek the power in our own individual spirits that are not defined by who holds office or what party we may or may not affiliate with.   While I am not a confrontational person by nature, I am realizing that by saying nothing I am giving stereotypes and division a pass, if not an endorsement. Like a lot of families, we have many different political opinions and support different candidates in ours. But we are more alike than we are different. I believe that is true of most of us. We want the same things in life and those things are pretty basic.  I think we are at a time when we need to speak out when we see something that hurts, that alienates, that divides and stereotypes us.  I don't want to be represented by the lowest denominator of my affiliations and I doubt anyone else does either. 4951

I was a Republican against Trump (as many here know), but now that he's won fair and square, I'm approaching the next 4 years with an open mind. He IS my President even though I didn't vote for him just as Obama is my President even though I never voted for him. "My" candidate hasn't won since 2004 and I'm still here and doing quite well, thank you very much. The world didn't come to an end like so many people predicted and are predicting now. I watched the interview and thought he came off as well as can be expected. I had a feeling he would tone down the rhetoric if he was actually elected and I think that bodes well for how he will govern (since none of us have any clue how he'll govern).  4951
