I have torn cartilage in my knee and the doctor wants me to have a cortisone shot.  I have been going to PT for a while now, but, it has not helped much with the pain or the swelling.  Have any of you had cortisone shots?  Did it work.? Would you do it again?  Did it take care of pain and swelling?  I have read a lot about cortisone shots but feel there are lots of negatives surrounding this treatment.  What do you guys think about cortisone?   4951

My dad did....he was in his 80's when he had his first one, but the difference it made was amazing.   He had a very cautious doctor,  who took the stance that one shot with many months elapsing before another was ok.   There was a significant difference in the pain and swelling in his knee. 4951

Had one a while back for a bad elbow. Doc said it could work for a day, a week, a month, forever. I was in the several days category, others have fared better. 4951

I had them in my foot many years ago. It was a temporary fix. The first one lasted a couple months, the second one didn't help at all so I just opted for surgery, which completely solved the problem. I've also done the steroid shots in my back with nearly the same results - first one worked for a few months but by the last round they were nearly ineffective. I also tend to not let myself rest as long as I should, which might be why they wore off so quickly, so if you decide to try one just make sure you don't overdue it afterwards. 4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA:   I went through the same thing.  Cortisone is only a temporary fix to relive the inflammation and it works differently for different people.  I eventually had my fixed.  Ask you ortho about Synvisc or an equivalent.  It worked wonders.  It have been 8+ years since I have had knee pain after this injection.http://www.synviscone.com/what-is-synvisc-one.aspx

My friend's mom gets them about once every 3 months in her knee. She's been doing this about 3 years. The shots don't work as well as they use to. My dd had micro surgery on a Monday and was dancing at her school on a Friday. She was the second of my dds to have the knee surgery, it was fixed and done. 4951

Before my knee replacement last year, the pain was often unbearable, but I was never without pain. I got my first steroid injection and within 3 days my pain level went from an 8-9 to a 1, sometimes a 0! They only lasted about 6 weeks for me because I was bone on bone, but it bought me a year before having to have surgery.

Since yours is a torn cartilage, the injection may allow your knee to heal and for PT to strengthen the structures around the knee!

There is a little discomfort with the injection, but it really wasn't bad. 4951

I think as long as it's given in the right spot than it will last a good amount of time. My DH has a shoulder muscle that is separated from the bone (if I am conveying that correctly...)... He got a shot and it did absolutely nothing. He ended up going to another doctor (bc the original one basically told him he would have to learn to live with the pain). The new orthopedic surgeon we went to was the athletic doctor for the US Winter Olympics team, He correctly diagnosed the issue, gave DH a shot and it lasted him almost a year. With PT, DH doesn't have as many issues with his shoulder anymore.Good luck - living with pain is very disruptive. 4951

I concur with every thing said. It will NOT fix torn cartilage ( or torn anything for that matter) BUT will help with inflammation. Did you tear your meniscus?
Dh get mixed results- sometimes the last 6 plus months sometimes a few weeks. His doc won't do more than 2 - year- because the steroid shots- over time- can damage the joint.
He has had pretty good success with Synvisc- it's a injection made from **** comb and is similar to the synovial fluid- so it helps the joint move better and give extra "cushioning" if you will.
The most important thing is to have an experience doc or pa give the injections- it's a small area and if they miss then you get NO relief and a big bill.

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA:

Corisone shots are a temporary treatment not a cure. They're steroid anti inflammatories that can work for a while, not forever. The damage will still be there and depending on severity may need to be cleaned up surgically.

in my experience they won't hurt you past the pain of receiving the shots. They don't always help and they wear off after a period of time. You can only receive them every 3 months, any more often and it'll deteriorate ligaments.

My advice, get the shots, if it works to take away the pain, great. Just don't go crazy with the pain gone, the damage is still there and the shots will suppress the inflammatory response and you won't know if you're making it worse. 4951

@Jherron:  That's what I am afraid of!

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA:

Don't stress over that part, nothing is going to fix cartilage damage, even surgery will only clean up the loose ends. If the damage isn't that bad and you can get the inflammation down, you'll be able to live just fine with a knee that clicks and gets sore when the weather changes. Atleast until it wears out and you need a new knee...then we have this conversation again 4951

I had three or four in the same tendon in my foot over the course of a couple of years. It was temporary relief....but definitely made me feel great for a few months at a time. I ended up having surgery since there is a limit to how many you can have. I had the surgery 4 weeks ago and still in a boot. Too soon to see if it fixed the problem for good... 4951
