I think there should be stricter rules that apply for one to collect benefits.
For example, there's a grossly morbidly obese man who hangs around Town Center. He must weigh over 400 lbs. & smokes. Is it fair for someone to disable themself & then have the taxpayers support their lifestyle? I've spoken with him & he collects a sizeable check every month & lives with his parents. He once told me that he could detail my car, for a sizeable amount, of course. If he can do that, couldn't he get a JOB?

I met a very obese lady, also from Kingwood, who is entitled to military benefits because she was once married to a man who had served some time in the military. She was his first wife many years ago & he then married 2 more times. She shows a military ID & is given discounts in restaurants & anywhere true military people are benefitted.
She also has a handicapped placard on her car & parks in the handicapped spaces. She has absolutely no problem ambulating, she's just lazy. Somehow, she's convinced a doctor to approve that handicapped placard.

Does all this seem fair?
Benefits should be for the people who truly need & deserve them. 4951

This is what is known as a Democrat...The political party opposite the Republican party. Their beliefs are that everyone should live on welfare, and no one should be too rich. That it's OK to kill innocent unborn children, but killing serial killers is bad. And that Socialism is OK, as long as you call it "change." Their mascot is a donkey, and it suits them 4951

This is why I can't vote for Hillary. She will give out more free stuff than even Obama.

Agree Fallon. Sometimes you can't see PTSD. Sometimes disabled may have a mental issue. There are times you may think someone shouldn't be parked in a handicap space, but who are we to know. 4951

What someone observes on the outside, has no bearing on what is going on inside a person.  There are a lot of ways to be declared disabled.  And none of them are easy.Ask @Jpgurl who is going thru something similar with her son. Many people have a handicapped sticker on their car, and you may see them hop out and walk inside to shop.  You may have no idea that this is their only good day in a month.  Many medications make people puff up and gain weight.  But without the medication they would be in agony. If someone was married to anyone in the military, they would have had to have been married for at least 18 years, may be more now, to be eligible to collect anything from that persons time in the military.  And their coverage is by no means what a military person would get either.  They get medical coverage, but are not able to shop on base.  Showing their military ID for discounts is shameful if they never served, imo.  It is easy to judge.  Sometimes you have to step back and use critical thinking skills.  Many people, who are on disability, are likely to be there because of mental health issues.   In that regard, you need to take what you are told with a massive grain of salt.  There is a lot of fraud in disability.  No doubt.  And the fraud makes it that much harder for people who really need it, to get it.  But unless you are a Dr looking at someones medical records, you honestly have no clue why they are on disability.

@Fallon: Not only that, but the service someone receives from the VA is subpar. My neighbor is an older vet who was injured when his ship - blew up! - and has been dealing with the physical and mental trauma for years. His military insurance mandates he gets treatment through the VA but they will barely treat him there. He had to spend thousands out of pocket to get an actual diagnosis for his pain from a non-VA doctor and that doctor couldn't believe what he had been going through and that the VA was not willing to take effort to properly diagnose him. It's really a sad situation for some of these people.

VA needs more funding and the ability to attract better talent. There are a lot of cuts that can be made to military benefits to achieve it. Ex: spousal, childcare, housing, etc. 4951

@FallonKudos,  clearly you understand that disability is not about how a person looks,  I would like to add that disability is not inability to work, it is inability to sustain substantial gainful activity in a competitive employment setting.  Anybody can work but for how long, how frequently and for level of remuneration.  Most disability recipients wish they were not in that situation. And please, people, understand how difficult it is to finally be awarded disability benefits, especially in Texas. 4951

The problem is that often the people who truly need help don't receive it. Look at the veterans who can't get the care they need, the number of suicides by our military.

On the other hand, if someone wants to remain single and not work, live with a guy who doesn't work, and have 10 kids, then they are eligible for a ton of benefits. Something is wrong with the system.

That's why I am voting for Trump. 4951

I would hope that only a physical disability grants a parking sticker.  You are not able to see them all though, agree with that!  People with bad hearts, copd, lung issues, etc.  But I feel should be physical issue, just opinion I have. 4951

@MuttonTo qualify for handicap parking the test is limited ambulation.  I don't recall the distance.  Generally, the abuse of the benefit is by an individual without limitation driving the permitted vehicle.  Reprehensible. 4951

@mulmye:
I only know what little I know due to DH being in a chair. Ofcourse he has a placard. Only used when he is in the vehicle! Many have been caught using a family members placard though not with, or one since deceased (think I remember a council person guilty of such). Makes me mad. 4951
