>> Went to the Octoberfest today and was a little disappointed. It was nice, don't get me wrong, but I think it could have been a lot better.
I really need to plan my own fair/festival/event. I plan so pretty kick butt parties, just sayin...
That being said, the Kingwood County Club is doing a holiday shopping event the first week in November. Open to the public. 30+ vendors plus appetizers and drinks! I will post details later.
@allymansfield: Me too!! The 15$$ plate being the biggest disappointment. I would hardly call Rudy Lechner's German food - I was disappointed when I went to that restaurant years ago and what they served today I would never feed my dog and has zero resemblance to any German food I ate the last 2 visits ( which covered North and Barvaria areas). They vastly underestimated the number of people and I waited in line for 20 minutes while they got more. No schnitzel at all- the sausages were hot dogs, some sort or red sausages and liver wurst cut up into bite sized pieces and put in a pan of water to boil- bleach. The sauerkraut and German potato salad was unrecognizeble as anything German or even American- not sure what the heck it was. My daughter took one bite of cut up hot dog and spit it out - I didn't bother. They ran out of beer but Back Pew got more- they worked their butts off as usual. They ran out of pretzels but my DD said the streusel was pretty good.
On the props side-It was a beautiful day so it was nice to sit outside, there was a nice crowd and they had a good bier tent.
It is their first year so I can forgive not enough food/beer. They had plenty of water ( my drink of choice) and prices were very reasonable and the workers were very nice and friendly. I'll go back next year but I'll eat lunch before just in case they decide Rudy Lechner's is a good choice. I wonder if the Biergarden in Pearland caters- I've heard it's awesome!!!
All in all a C+ for their first try
@Jpgurl ok, didn't realize it was their first year. I agree on the food. I am part Ukraine and make a mean sour kraut, theirs was too sweet for me. The sausage was marginal at best. Polska restaurant (?) has good kielbasa but that's polish...I can't imagine there isn't a traditional German place downtown? Not sure about the beirguarten, it was just a tent? I did like how the kids stuff was free and that they had two bounce houses, one for big kids and one for little. Although bad on the two sets of parents who let their 9-12 year old boys play rough in the little guys bounce house. I wanted to tell the boys to go in the other one but held my tongue. Harvest bread co had good strudel, my son had about 3 pieces but I did think $3 for a slice was a bit much, didn't get a pretzel. They ran out of strudel and pretzels in the last two hours but did have someone bring cheddar beer bread, so good on them. I didn't try that. Never went inside, was there shopping? There was a great crowd. Hopefully next year they will make some improvements and grow. But not too bad for a first go!
@allymansfield: I d not go inside. Below is the place I've heard some amazing things about. The owner is German and he is opening a place ( soon) in the Heights called King's Bierhaus.
I think the kraut must've been canned and a cheap brand at that!! I use Libby's Barvarian ( with caraway seeds) or Silverfloss when I need to and both of those brands are better than whatever that junk was!!!! It was sweet and weird tasting ( maybe bacon grease???)- can't put my finger on it. I've had kraut salad in Germany which is not like sauerkraut at all and is very good and also sauerkraut.
They did make a good go at it. If I were them I'd put the market outside- it was so nice outside I just had no ambition to go inside. I do hope they do it again- I had fun- just didn't care for the food
