My golden mix tore a ligament in his knee in the right hind leg. He was examined about 3 weeks ago. Been on some pain medication but it hasn't helped and he is getting worse. He always would follow me and my daughter around the house and never wanted to be alone. Now he just wants to stay outside 24/7. He won't even come in at night. We see the vet this afternoon. I am scared the only choice is surgery which I don't want to put him through or making the awful choice to put him down when his quality of life is just too bad. He has had FHO surgery on both hips when he was younger and his one good hind leg that he puts weight on is so wobbly. He has such a hard time using the bathroom. I have been crying on and off today. It is so hard to see him suffer. 4951

We had two labs who both tore the ACL in one of their knees. The younger lab had lung cancer and died a few months ago, but the older one is still getting around.

Vet initially wanted us to do a $3k surgery on his knee but would require us to keep him down for atleast 8 weeks after. another vet I trust told us the surgery wouldn't be worth it anyways as he'd still have a limp. Eventually the knee scarred over and with daily antiinflammatories, joint supplements and a light pain killer he's getting around just fine.

I know the situation isn't the same and the history of hip complications changes a lot, but just wanted you to know that it's not necessarily a death sentence for them. 4951

Poor doggy. Wonder if wrapping his hind legs with an Ace bandage would help him. Just snug, not tight, just like they tape up athletes to support various joints. 4951

@foxymama:  Please remember he is not going away from you because he doesn't love you. Dogs when they're hurting are like chronically ill patients, they turn inward.I'm sure we will be thinking of you throughout the day and hoping you get some solid, good news.

@foxymama, if he is 10, you will really have to think long and hard about any surgery.  That is up there for a lab/golden.He may just be in pain from arthritis.I do hope it is something easy, like pain meds.  Good luck today.

@Fallon:
The X-rays didn't show arthritis.  The vet was actually really surprised he didn't have any.   4951

Well, His vet and the orthopedic specialist saw him today.  And they both agree that he would not handle the surgery well with his weak hips and muscle deterioration. Also his knee is much worse than 3 weeks ago.  He had just a little movement in the knee and now the joint moves a LOT in directions its not suppose to.  They think  his ligamaent has completely torn apart.  He does have a fever so the vet has him on antibiotics and will call me tomorrow to see if his spirits have improved any.  If the antibiotics don't help him then i have no choice but to put him out of his misery.  Even the vet agreed he is suffering a lot. He hopes it from an infection an the antibiotics help give him some more time.  Also, the vets think the reason his ligament tore is from his muscle deteiration and add stress from the weak hips.  So the other knee is going to give as well.  I can't let him suffer through this again.It will be hard on me and my husband but OMG my 4 year old daughter is going to be so sad to  loose her best friend.  I don't know what to do on the day i have to put him down.  DO i bring her or not?  We are suppose to go on vacation in two weeks and I don't know if i am gonna feel like it now.What are burial options of a dog? 4951

@foxymama:
Tough call. If me I will be bawling so not sure if having a wee one along would be good? But you have to be honest and and let them know what is happening. Just not sure if they need witness?

Am so heartbroken for your family. Is never easy...prayers for you and yours. Just remember, we are their only caretakers. 4951

I guess it depends on the maturity of your 4 year old AND your ability to stay calm and help your daughter through this. I personally would not brought my kids that young. My kids were 13 and 11 when they attended and they asked.
What I would do is see if your dog feels well enough to come home or even to go to a park( even stay in the car if he can't move a lot) . Buy him some dog treats- heck even go and get him a hamburger and have a goodby celebration and try to help your daughter process it.
If you can be present for the euthanasia- it's peaceful and will help your dog with you there.
Choices are
Take him home for burial( check with you HOA)
Have him cremated and get the ashes back- or not.
We choose to get our pets' ashes back- we have a memorial garden and there are 3 azalea bushes- they LOVE the ash and I have some glorious blooms.

I am so sorry- it's the hardest part of being guardians to our pets. I have so many pieces of my heart gone with my pets. I think of Ol Man TJ daily- but I see a lot of him in our new pup - 4951
