@Annie:

The new Kroger on NP has great pumpkin prices right now. As in 5 bucks.

They will keep outdoors for several weeks as long as you don't cut them. 4951

I buy them a few weeks before Halloween.  The ones we cut for Halloween have to be thrown out within a week.  All the others stay out and are part of our fall decorations till Thanksgiving.  Then DH puts them in the back yard.  I have to admit, I have still had leftover whole pumpkins when spring comes around.  By that time they need to go into the garbage. 4951

We waited till summer one year for one to ripen so that it would ferment.  DH wanted to film some drunk squirrels.  The dang pumpkin never did ferment.

If you don't cut them they last a good while. If you want to cut them I heard that if you dip it in bleach water it helps them last longer. 4951

@mm4731 is getting rid of some slightly used pumpkins. You will need that bleach water though. 4951

I painted them white, spray paint, and used a long dow rod to hold them one on top of the other. I made them into a snowman!

@Fallon: This speaks volumes. When you turn fall produce into fake snowmen, in an area that has neither fall or winter. I'm being tortured every time I log on.

Pumpkins do normally last a long time outside, uncut.  But some of it depends on the weather.  Too wet or too hot they won't last long at all. 4951
